Lot 55

Artist: El Lissitzky (Russian, 1890-1941). Title: "Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge". Medium: Original color lithograph. Date: Composed 1919. Printed c1926. Dimensions: Image size: 18 1/4 x 22 1/8 in. (464 x 562 mm).Lot Note(s): Edition unknown, presumed very small. Off-white wove paper. Margins. Fine, strong impression. Overall good condition with no serious issues. Minor edge tears, not into the image. The work could be conserved easily. It has not been hinged. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Lissitzky-Kuppers 40. Comment(s): An extremely important print and arguably El Lissitzky's most famous image. Our example compares favorably with the example printed c1926 which sold for $41,400 at Swann Galleries, New York City, April 21, 2005, lot #70. In this propaganda object published during the Russian Civil War, the intrusive red wedge symbolizes the Bolsheviks, who are penetrating and defeating their opponents, the White Movement. Lazar Markovich Lissitzky was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist, and architect. He was an important figure of the Russian avant garde, helping develop suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designing numerous exhibition displays and propaganda works for the former Soviet Union. His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus and constructivist movements, and he experimented with production techniques and stylistic devices that would go on to dominate 20th-century graphic design. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff - - 1884 Rottluff bei Chemnitz - 1976 Berlin Gutshof im Mondlicht. 1934. 51,3 x 70 cm (20,1 x 27,5 in), blattgroß. Privatsammlung Baden-Württemberg (seit 2003, Villa Grisebach Auktionen, 28.11.2003, Los 43). Privatsammlung Hessen (2019 vom Vorgenannten durch Erbschaft erhalten). AUSSTELLUNG: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Neue Aquarelle, Ausstellungsraum Karl Buchholz, Berlin, 1935, Kat.-Nr. 12. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Gemälde, Aquarelle, Graphik, Kunsthandwerk aus Privatsammlungen, Lippische Gesellschaft für Kunst e. V., Lippisches Landesmuseum / Schloss Dettmold, 5.11.-3.12.1978, Kat.-Nr. 22, mit Abb., S. 18. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Aquarelle, Farbstiftzeichnungen, Schmuck, Kunstverein Paderborn, 1982, Kat.-Nr. 6, mit Abb., S. 22. LITERATUR: Gunther Thiem, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Ungemalte Bilder 1934-1944 und Briefe an einen jungen Freund, München/Berlin 2002, mit Farbabb., Nr. 6, S. 27. Villa Grisebach Auktionen, Berlin, 112. 'Spiegelnder See', 1932, Öl auf Leinwand, Museum Folkwang, Essen). World War I -- Souvenir album of a high-ranking German officer during WWI. Circa 1915. Circa 34 vintage gelatin silver prints. Various sizes, most 12 x 17 cm and smaller. Inserted in album window mats, bound in contemporary cloth album. An unusual album most likely documenting a propaganda trip of the German Kaiser and Field Marshal Hindenburg through various German cities after the so-called Battle of Tannenberg. The images show the entusiastic welcoming of Hindenburg by crowds during official events such as visiting old war veterans from 1870/71 and a military hospital for war injured. The popularity of Hindenurg in the Weimar Republic was greatly promoted by this event. – Some with fading in edges, some with light oxidation mirroring, a few with creases, small tears, otherwise most photos in good condition.
