Nazi Propaganda The Case of the `Athenia` by Adolf Halfeld New York 1940 white card wrappers 53pp 8vo. An American production aimed at persuading the American public that `...ruthlessness violence and guile are the three weapons employed by Great Britain to preserve her tottering Empire...` The Athenia a passenger liner bound for America was the first ship sunk in WWII - the event was immediately seized on by the British as a propaganda tool against the Nazis in an effort to bring America into the war in the same way that the Lusitania had been instrumental in bringing America into WWI. The Germans claimed that they had not sunk the vessel but it later emerged that U-Boat U37 had in fact sunk the ship though as the commander claimed in error. The Nazi propaganda machine then counter attacked claiming that Churchill himself had ordered the sinking of the vessel as a cynical plot to create a propaganda coup. A rare book.

Incunabula (Folio CCLIIII), Schedel, Liber Chronicarum, Basel, [1493]. 12 x 16.3”. (BW) In this 15th century woodcut, Jews are depicted murdering the child Simon of Trent. This `murder` is one of the sources of the medieval blood libel: the allegation that Jews used Christian children`s blood to make matzoth (unleavened bread) during Passover. The Jews can be recognized by the circular patches sewn on their clothing and by the moneybags they carry. This image is often erroneously called the circumcision, but it is actually a representation of this alleged event, which took place in Trento, Italy in 1475. This is an important image in the history of anti-Semitism and was used most recently in Nazi propaganda. Recto includes an illustration of a comet and the portraits of Christian (Christiernus), king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden and Ercole (Hercules) d`Este, son of the Marquis Niccolo. Dark impression. She was laying mines in the Thames Estuary on 5 August when she was sighted by British fishing boats, who then reported it to the Royal Navy. After being chased and fired upon by two British ships, the Königin Luise became the first German naval loss of World War I. The Goeben (Yavuz) SMS Goeben was a purpose-built battercruiser class ship, commissioned in 1912. Her first duty was to head up the German Mediterranean Division during the Balkan Wars. At the outbreak of World War I, Goeben evaded the British navy in the Mediterranean and reached Constantinople in August 1914. Later that year, Goeben was transferred to the Ottoman Empire and was renamed Yavuz, where she served out World War I in the Black Sea. She was eventually decommissioned in 1950, making her the longest serving battlecruiser/dreadnought class ship in any navy.
