Chuckles (1917) 157-208. Complete year in two bound volumes. Starring Tiger Tim, Breezy Ben and Dismal Dutchy, some propaganda WWI issues including Nos 172-193 in smaller two-colour-format. This was due to the war effort and the 'urgent need for strict economy in paper where a large number of the vessels which have hitherto carried paper must now be freed for the conveyance of food and munitions'. The Editor also states that 'The reduction in the size of Chuckles will be for a time only and I am sure that all Chuckleites will, in the national interest, ungrudgingly make this small sacrifice and loyally rally round their favourite comic'. VIDOCQ EUGENE FRANÇOIS: (1775-1857) French Criminalist and former criminal. Founder of the “Sureté Nationale”, French secret police, and first private detective agency. Widely considered the father of modern criminology. Vidocq´s life inspired writers like Victor Hugo and Edgar Allan Poe. A good A.L.S., `Vidocq´, two pages, 4to, 4th January 1850, in French. Vidocq extensively reports on the benefits of his services, stating in part `Seems like Mr. Dupont de Bussac, your friend, is the Chief Editor of a renowned journal… You know as well as I do that at today´s date the most useful companies, the best ones, often are forgotten if they are not presented and properly and with the right advertising! But today, people, readers, do not believe anymore in what newspapers say. You must dare to say things..´ further on advising his correspondent to use the right people to make circulate the message, saying `..in charge of browsing all over Paris and suburbs and oblige cleverly the caterers, chimney keepers, lemonade sellers, distillers, etc.. to get this new democratic tool.´ Vidocq concludes offering his services `I can, with small expenses, take in charge this propaganda work which returns are not doubtful…I will prove the efficiency of my services´ Folded, with creasing to the borders and a tear to the left edge fold not affecting the text or signature. T.L.S., `Vicente Blasco Ibañez´, two pages, on two separate sheets, 4to, Menton, 30th June 1927, on his personal printed stationery, to an unidentified friend, in Spanish. Blasco Ibañez refers to his royalties for the French translation of the work El Papa del Mar about the antipope Benedict XIII. He announces his arrival to Paris at the Claridge Hotel, and expects to meet his correspondent to talk about the book and the number of copies they have to request from Flammarion the editor in order to help with the propaganda. With few amendments in the hand of the Spanish author. VG £100-150

Rare vintage signed and inscribed sepia 11.5 x 15.5 photograph, unusual in this size, the image depicting Goebbels in a profile head and shoulders pose. Signed ('Dr. Goebbels') in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image, with a three line inscription in German, the Nazi salute ('Heil Hitler') and date, 18th October 1935, in his hand. Partially written across a darker area of the image although legible. Signed photographs of Goebbels of this size and quality are extremely rare. VG £1000-1500

(47cm.). * Lord Kitchener was one of the most celebrated war heroes of the late Victorian period.

August 1914 Originalgroosse des 42cm Geschosses / Our bomb shell dropped on 7 August 1914. The German armaments manufacturer Krupp secretly designed this heavy artillery mobile weapon that was built to destroy reinforced concrete and became known as Big Bertha / Dicken Bertha after destroying the Fort de Loncin in 1914; the Fort is now a Great War memorial site and museum. The Reich Propaganda Directorate ( RPL ) was from 1926 to 1945 the leading service of the NSDAP for press work, film, radio and "popular education".
