Ein Jahrhundert Industriearbeit im Bild 1830-1930, cat. no. 162 with illus. (transport label on frame)LiteratureReinhard Schilf (ed.), Experiment Kalltalgemeinschaft- Die Kölner Progressiven in Simonskall 1919-1921, Weilerswist 2008, cf. Angelikas Erbe, p. 44/45; cf. Lynette Roth, Handwerk oder "Das Werk der Hand", in: 1920-33, köln progressiv, seiwert-hoerle-arntz, Katalogbuch, Museum Ludwig, Cologne 2008, p. 70 f.According to the date located next to the monogram, the “Drei Arbeiterköpfe” by Franz Wilhelm Seiwert, which were previously placed somewhat earlier in his oeuvre, have moved closer to an important work of 1927, “Freitagabend”, a painting which was formerly housed in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, was confiscated in 1933 and destroyed during a bombing raid (see comparative illus.). It is not just the profile type of the man with a moustache that can be found there. In the 1920s Seiwert developed a certain repertoire of formulaic motifs and constructive figurations which he knew how to modify and combine almost in the manner of stencils. Coupled with an emphatic two-dimensionality of the picture, these included the use of simplified and abbreviated forms employed to produce strong contrasts: circular curved forms, emphatic vertical and horizontal lines and staggered diagonals. These elements of geometric abstraction, the rigorously simplified contours, the elements drawn on to the heads and figures and their densely packed alternation in frontal and profile views are stylistic devices which originally derived from Seiwert's graphic work and his artistic and political propaganda. While efforts had already been made since 1919 to “create building blocks for a new visual language” - for example, Angelika Hoerle's linocuts for an “a b c Bilderbuch” (cf. “Angelikas Erbe”, in: Experiment Kalltalgemeinschaft, op. cit., p. 44) - the question of the reach and acceptance of the revolutionary art of the “Kölner Progressive” within society remained a constant theme that also left its mark in the form of articles in the journal “a-z” (1929-1933). In the medium of oil painting, Seiwert had been experimenting not just with the attained elements of a new pictorial idiom but also with painting techniques and supports since the middle of the decade as well as in the “Drei Arbeiterköpfe” of 1926. Seiwert's emphasis on materialities, on colours and tactile surfaces distinguishes him and situates his work in the midst of the international artistic avant-garde context of those years.See further works by F.W. Seiwert in our Auction 1163 on 9 December 2020, lots 493-499.

IRWIN: "IKONA: CROSS 'AROUND NECK'" "IKONA: CROSS 'AROUND NECK'" Assemblage aus Krawatte und Schraubdeckel aus Aluminium, alles farbig mit Acryl gefasst, montiert in verglasten Objektkasten. 2006. 72 x 22 x 5,9 cm. Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

A rare Soviet porcelain chess set 'The Reds against The Whites'State Porcelain Factory, Leningrad, USSR, 1933-1934, after design by Natalia Danko (1892-1942)On the White side: the King is designed as Death draped in black ermine-lined cloak and holding a sword and long bone; the Queen as Fortuna with a cornucopia spilling gold coins: the Knights as White Army officers dressed in gold and black uniforms; the Bishops as armoured horses surmounted with double-headed eagles, the Rooks as sail boats with crowed masts and sails decorated with pole axe within chain garland; and the Pawns as chained serfs; on the Red side: the King is designed as a blacksmith leaning on a large hammer, the Queen as a peasant maiden holding stalk of wheat and field flowers in one arm and a sickle in the other; the Knights as soldiers dressed in uniform of the Red Army and standing next to the hammer and sickle on the star-shaped pedestal; the Bishops as horses rising from overlapping red stars; the Rooks as sail boats of two slightly varying designs with masts supporting sails in shape of pink stars; and the Pawns as young male peasants holding golden stalks of wheat and silver sickles, all marked underside with blue factory mark height of the White King: 11cm (4 1/4in) and smaller (32)Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired by American Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and writer Edgar Ansel Mowrer in Russia, 1936Thence by descentEdgar Ansel Mowrer (1892-1977), a renown foreign correspondent, write and lecturer, was often referred to as 'the most distinguished of all reporters on world affairs' of his generation. He began his illustrious career as a foreign correspondent for Chicago Daily News and was dispatched to Paris in 1914. There he reported on events throughout the First World War, often sending riveting reports from the front-lines. By spring 1915 Mowrer was sent to cover events in Italy. He made personal acquaintance with Benito Mussolini and reported on devastating events at the battle at Caporetto. As a journalist Mowrer often sounded alarms about growing threats of rising fascism in Italy. In January 1924 Mowrer moved to Berlin where he worked with a distinguished group of correspondents, such as Herbert Knickerbocker, Dorothy Thompson, Walter Durranty and Eugene Lyons - who elected him president of the Foreign Press Association. He later remembered that: 'Berlin in the nineteen twenties was a kind of stopping off place not only for Russians heading West, but for the Americans entering or leaving the Soviet Union, including those who lived there and needed occasionally to come up for air.' No doubt that cosmopolitan group of friends with ties to the Soviet Union to some degree triggered Mowrer's fascination with socialist state which a decade later culminated in a long trip to Moscow and Leningrad. In Berlin Mowrer watched with growing concerns the growth of fascism in Germany as well as a consolidation of political power under Stalin in the Soviet Union. His unapologetic opposition to fascism expressed in articles and a book won him the highly acclaimed Pulitzer Prize in 1933 and essentially made him 'persona non grata' with regime in Germany after Hitler took office. In 1936 driven by his journalistic curiosity and sensing the inevitable escalation of the tensions in Europe, Mowrer and his wife embarked on a month-long trip to Moscow and Leningrad. It is believed that the present porcelain chess set was acquired during that trip. Given Mowrer's distrust of all totalitarian regimes and his critique of the Soviet system, he must have found this chess set to be a curious and rare examples of unapologetic socialist propaganda and a precious travel souvenir to cherish later on.Upon his return to the USA Mowrer continued his journalistic career both as columnist and later as a TV commentator and magazines editor, as well as the author of several critically claimed books on foreign affairs, future of diplomacy and global political balance. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Gu Wenda United Nations-Gengzi's Necklace, 2020 Pen on print on Paper Signed recto 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Gu moved to the U.S. in 1987. He currently lives and works in Shanghai and New York. The United Nations project (using human hair as material) the artist embarked in 1993, which has been included in various publications on world art history, addresses the notion of a single humanity. The postcards feature the most recent work of the project: Gengzi's necklace, completed in August 2020. The work was inspired by the recent global pandemic.   Gu has developed a personal vocabulary of invented Chinese characters by misplacing various aspects of existing characters to create new and meaningless words. This tactic among others is the artist's means to subvert tradition while using its formal attributes. "I used characters without any meaning and political icons taken from propaganda and inserted them into my ink painting," he explained. "For me, this was a kind of double power: these ink works were both scholarly and socialist." Born in 1955 in Shanghai, China, Gu was encouraged in pursuing a creative career from a young age by his family. However, this interest in culture led his grandparents to be taken away for re-education by Mao Zedong's regime. He went on to study traditional Chinese landscape painting under Lu Yanshao at the China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou.   In 1987, Wenda moved to the United States, where he began to employ materials related to human body. Intending to celebrate life and promote universal accord, Gu created his United Nations Project in 1993. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Museum of Art in Beijing, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, among others.
