Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu MBE, Nigerian/British 1917-1994 - Woman and Afele; wood, inscribed plaque attached to the original base 'Woman and Afele by Ben Enwonwu', H55.5 x W26 x D23 cm (including base) Provenance: Gifted from the Artist; thence by descent Note: Ben Enwonwu is considered to be one of the most influential and pioneering African artists of the 20th century.Born in Nigeria in 1917, Enwonwu studied fine art under Kenneth C. Murray at Government College, Nigeria, from 1934 before being awarded a scholarship in 1944 to study in the UK at the Slade School of Fine Arts. During his studies within the UK, the British colonial government employed Enwonwu to create posters for their propaganda campaigns directed towards skilled, colonised Nigerians assisting in the post-war reconstruction efforts within the UK. In many aspects he was presented as a result of the British colonial governments efforts of tutelage in their colonies, however he was also adopted by African activists who considered him a part of Nigeria¥s quest for political independence. His unusual position within Western society and back home in Nigeria meant his talent was exploited for multiple parties; evidently he actively contributed to both sides, and his artwork of this period documents his interaction with both contexts. As a result, his work is considered to be pioneering and consequently a unique form of African Modernist art. This sculpture is a wonderful example of Enwonwu¥s style, focusing on the exploration and representation of the human body. Through his carving, Enwonwu masterfully emphasises the qualities of the wood to create smooth and sinuous abstract forms which exude a sense of motion and grace. Moskau, Izogiz, 1935.Karasik-Heiting, The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941, 214 ff. (mit zahlr. Abb.). Parr-Badger I, 160 ff. The Book of 101 Books 82 ff. The Open Book 116. - Einzige Ausgabe der sehr seltenen, effektvollen, sowjetischen Propaganda-Dokumentation von Eliezer "El" Lissitzky (1890-1941) über die sozialistische Industrialisierung. "Following his success with the 'USSR Builds for Socialism', El Lissitzky was commissioned to design a multi-volume report along similiar lines for the Seventh Congress of Soviets in 1935, an interim review of the progress of Stalin's second Five-Year Plan. In tone and content Socialist Industry closely follows the style of the magazine 'USSR in Construction', and El Lissitzky and his wife Sophie Küppers (who had become his close collaborator by this time) took many of the more radical design ideas they had conceived for the periodical and developed them in book form. The result is a cornucopia of graphic design and photomontage, arguably the high point both of Lissitzky's book designing career and of the Soviet propaganda photobook ... It is the couple's most cinematic photobook, the result of their theoretical discussions on the techniques of montage with the film-maker Dziga Vertov. In no other book is the imagery quite so brilliantly piled up, one picture upon the other, the ideas constantly inventive and dazzling. It is as if Lissitzky found the normal form of the book page so restricting that he was compelled to push beyond its boundaries at every turn" (Parr/Badger S. 160). - "The Industry of Socialism is one of El Lissitzky’s masterpieces. Everything in the book, beginning with the cover image, speaks of the triumph of Soviet Industry." (Karasik-Heiting). Statt "LIFE" steht hier "DEATH. Doomsday 1944 10 Cents. Yearly Subscription $4.50 Cents".

GREECE. BYZANTINE EMPIRE. Justinian I (527-565). Bronze follis, 541/2. Constantinople. Justinian I 482-565, inherited the throne from his uncle Justin I in 527. Justinian is best known for his very ambitious Renovatio imperii, or Restoration of the (Roman) Empire. Ultimately this ambition was only partly realised but still impressive, resulting in the reconquest of Italy, Spain, and North Africa from the Ostrogoth and Vandal tribes. This piece, introduced in 538 at the height of Justinian's power, is of the "heavy" variety, averaging 50mm in diameter and 20g in weight. The purpose of this unusually large coin has been the subject of considerable academic debate. It has been suggested by some that an influx of gold from the North African conquest brought with it inflationary pressures that led to the devaluation of the gold solidus in relation to the copper follis, and that this new size was an attempt to remedy the disrupted gold/copper ratio. Others have argued that this coin's purpose was propaganda and PR. The larger coin providing a larger canvas for Justinian to display his success and prestige to the wider population. Regardless, the experiment with the larger follis didn't work for very long as the weight and size was quickly reduced soon after. Helmeted, cuirassed bust facing holding globus cruciger and shield; cross to right "DN IVSTINIANVS PP AVG" / Large M between A/N/N/O and numerals representing the regnal year, cross above, officina letter beneath, CON in exergue.Ch VF Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5, slight bend. Diameter: 51 mm.Weight: 21.25 g.Composition: Bronze.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. No other fees, including live bidding. Delivery cost will be added to your order.

Original antique Soviet Ukraine Communist propaganda poster – Away with the bandits – the enemies of the working people. Workers of all countries unite! – the poster features illustrations of people in the village suffering from the hands of bandits who are looting, drinking, fighting, setting fire, and stealing, the villagers create a defence squad to protect their land, poem in Russian translates as – The peaceful village is in turmoil: bandits have swooped in like a whirlwind, sowing evil with their bloody hand... and here is their program in practice: Komnezamozh and the Executive Committee were instantly turned into a heap. The food warehouse is destroyed and there is grain and flour all around in the mud everywhere. The villagers cry in vain, their curses will be answered by a sword. A bandit is like a beast - he is drunk with blood, swearing hangs heavily over his scream. If he sees a fur coat, he will take it away, he will take away a serviceable horse, he will kill the Komnezamozhnik, he will not pass a single house. A steam locomotive is very dear to us, it helps in the fight against devastation, a bandit is ready to calmly send a train derailed. He is ready to undress and to rob, but to feed and arrange .. no way! He will for the sake of a joke burn and destroy the people's hard work. Cities should not wait for bread, and villages should not expect that sowing sowing equipment will come to ease the labour. The bandit thought differently and his goal is completely different: he enriched himself, while others ... let them starve! Having looked out for a clearing in the forest, the guys made a halt. They eat both chickens and sausage, this time they are rich in prey. Moonshine pours abundantly, sparkling bottles gurgle ... Sleep was already closing their eyelids, their brains and veins swelled with alcohol. They decided to divide the junk, and then pandemonium began: a fist, a dagger, a butt, a muzzle quickly solved all doubts. The father himself, the formidable ataman, in a smart outfit with belts, sits on a stump, like an idol, admiring his sons through the hop filled eyes. Having somehow calmed the fire in the village, buried the bodies of the dead, the villagers, both young and old, discussed the bandits for a long time. They decided they need their own detachment to defend the village with a gun when the bandits want to appear again in its surroundings. And so that the struggle could more accurately scatter Cain's tribe, all the deserters were pulled out of the cracks at the same time. They counted shotguns, Browning guns, cartridges. The village lives more calmly, keeps your lawful order. Where there is the power of free labour, there is no shelter for the rapists, the dark horde does not dare to impose fetters on citizens there. Hard work is held in high esteem there, contempt for drunken revelry, they boldly take weapons there, preventing an attack. And now, bending in shame, hastening to carry away the skins from the sticks, the dark horde leaves, like a dog, to look for a kennel. It is high time! Happy way! Now it will become more spacious for the plow to pull furrows on arable land, to dress the district in brocade of bread. Fair condition, restored paper losses, restored tears, staining, creasing, backed on Japanese paper. Country of issue: Ukraine, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 81x60, year of printing: 1920s.
