WWII – Nazi Anti-Semitism The Kaiser’s Dream published by the leading anti-Semitic publishing firm Bodung Verlang featuring a large graphic showing Kaiser Wilhelm II with explanatory text. Rare. A notorious piece of Nazi propaganda. It purports to be the verbatim text of a document discovered in England by a German army officer in 1890 in which it clearly indicates that the events of WWI and the subsequent events leading to WWII were a plot by Jewish and Freemasonry interests in order to destroy Germany and therefore to allow them to achieve world domination. In order to get across its message as far as it could it was printed in three languages – English German and French. The original text was claimed to have appeared in a publication called Truth’ – which according to this pamphlet miraculously disappeared without trace.

American Fascists Look to Germany the Heart of Europe by Stanley McClatchie from the USA 1st edition 1937 published by Heinrich Hoffman pictorial boards and a large qty of photographic illustrations to accompany the English text extolling the virtues of Hitler and the Nazis. Extremely rare. “Look to Germany” was written in 1936 by American Stanley McClatchie who had lived in Germany prior to the NSDAP’s ascent to power in 1933 & was impressed by the industrial technical & social revolution under the Nazis. He knew that his book would be seen as Nazi propaganda & it certainly was. To this day the book is considered to be too dangerous to be read in Germany & other European countries. Nearly all copies were destroyed by the Allies thus it became generally unavailable. Original examples are very scarce.

WWII – Propaganda poster remarkable large poster issued on October 16th 1939 showing a group of British soldiers about to embark to France with their usual good humoured faces and with chalked slogans such as : ‘Hitler – we’re on the way’. This is on the right hand of the poster and on the left is a picture of a line of defeated Polish soldiers being taken as Prisoners of War. The headline on the poster reads in translation : ‘English Soldiers ! Don’t make the same mistake as the Poles ! Don’t try to go to Berlin !’ A remarkable and very rare poster from the very earliest days of WWII.
WWII – Colditz – Britisher Freikorps remarkable sketch map drawn in pencil showing the relative positions of the countries of Europe and with a particular location marked with a double X at a spot west of the Caspian Sea. This is written on the back of a German propaganda booklet entitled ‘My Ally by Winston Churchill’ and has a remarkable provenance. The map was written for escape purposes by Captain Rupert Barry while a POW in the infamous Colditz Castle. His signature appears on the inside cover of the book together with the comment : ‘German propaganda issued in Oflag IV c [ie Colditz] Nov 1943.’ The reason why Barry retained the volume was that it was distributed to POWs at Colditz by members of the notorious Britisher Freikorps – the SS Regiment set up by Himmler which was made up exclusively of British combatants. Barry kept the book for use as evidence in potential trials of members of the Britisher Freikorps as traitors after the war – some indeed were indicted and hanged – in particular John Amery who had thought up the idea. Material of this nature concerning Colditz is now exceedingly rare. Barry himself was one of the leading POW in the castle. He it was with Pat Reid who devised a simple code system in letters which the POWs were allowed to send home which provided the British Intelligence Service with vital information. He also tried to escape in the famous tunnel escapade – in fact he was second out of the tunnel - but was recaptured. This particular volume is featured in ‘Collecting Colditz and its Secrets’ by Michael Booker where the activities of Barry are discussed.
WWII – the Britisher Freikorps “The Soviets – Are They Human?” booklet on 12pp sm 8vo in fine condition. Excessively rare. This was produced by the Nazis for distribution by the Britisher Freikorps to British POWs in an attempt to turn their minds to join the Regiment – the British Division of the SS. Naturally copies of this and other propaganda booklets distributed in this way were destroyed by members of the Freikorps at the end of WWII in a desperate attempt to destroy the evidence of their treason but a very few copies were retained by British Intelligence for use as evidence at any potential treason trials.
WWII – The Holocaust ‘Trau keinem Fuchs auf gruner heid und keinem Jud bei seinem eid’ [Don’t trust a fox on the green heather nor a Jew by his oath] by E Bauer. This excessively rare book is considered by far the worst anti-Semitic book every published mainly for its naked and aggressive attack on the Jews via lurid illustrations in garish colours but also because it’s author was an 18 year old girl – and of course it was produced as a children’s book. The publisher was Julius Streicher whose anti-Semitic excesses were so awful that they even enraged leading Nazis such as Goering. The book contains a total of 21 full page cartoons somewhat crudely drawn but each with a powerful message to children that the Jew was not to be trusted and the Jewish people were responsible for the ills and depravations of the German people – images include a top hated fat man walking away with a fair haired German girl with promises of trinkets – but from the look on his face with clear sexual intent on his mind. There is also the Jewish butcher selling substandard meat in his filthy shop and the Jewish accountant who swindles the hard working German farming couple. Streicher couldn’t resist a part in all of this and two of the illustrations are blatant examples of self propaganda – one showing children gathering around a public display of his vile newspaper ‘Der Sturmer’ and the other showing him in Nazi uniform being greeted by a throng of delighted children. Each illustration is accompanied by a suitably worded message written in verse so that the average German child could easily get the bed-time message. Copies of this vile book are naturally excessively rare on the market. At the downfall of Hitler it would not have been wise to have kept a copy and as such it remains one of the rarest books available.

* Pacific Islands propaganda. A group of seven large vintage gelatin silver prints, 1957/58, all mounted with pencil captions to mounts, including “Gilbertese dancers, Christmas Island” x 2 (one from 1957 and one from 1958), two titled “Apia, Samoa”, one dated 1957, both showing one adult with two children, plus two group portraits of happy Christmas islanders dated 1957 and 1958, plus one view of a line of thatched huts on Christmas Island dated 1958, approx. 35 x 41cm and sl. smaller, mounts a little soiled and one uniformly toned, no marks or credits to versos. During 1957 and 1958 Britain conducted nuclear tests in the Pacific including six at Christmas Island, then a British colony. British, Australian, New Zealand and Fijian servicemen were exposed to risks of radiation, as were the indigenous Gilbertese in the test zones. For decades personnel exposed to the radiation have sought compensation from Britain’s Ministry of Defence who deny negligence or that sickness is caused by exposure to the radiation. These fine photographs were probably taken by the British RAF to demonstrate how life was unaffected by the nuclear tests. (7)
