Gaskin (Arthur) Decorative wooden money box with hinged lid, painted by Arthur Gaskin with procession of children carrying slates beneath a banner reading "This Is The Way We Go To School / We Go To School / This Is The Way We Come From School / Come From School" running round sides, inscribed on lid "William Edward Laurence Hodson Born Feb 24 MDCCCXC His Money Box", brass keyhole & escutcheon and hinges but lacking key, filled with small quantity of bookplates in the name of William Edward Laurence Hodson, c.85 x 115 x 70mm., 1890. ⁂ Arthur Gaskin (1862-1928) was a member of the Birmingham Arts and Crafts group. He taught at the Birmingham School of Art, worked as an illustrator for William Morris and others, and designed jewellery and enamels. He knew Laurence Hodson well and Hodson owned many examples of his work including an oil painting The Annunciation. Gaskin designed several Christmas cards for the Hodson family, some of which feature Hodson's children Helen and Will. This decorative box was possibly a christening present for Will.Saleroom Notice: This is painted by Arthur Gaskin’s wife, Georgie, rather than by Arthur. She was also a member of the Birmingham Arts and Crafts group and she worked closely with Arthur, designing the jewellery they made together. She also drew the Christmas cards for the Hodsons.
