A German silver singing bird musical box, apparently unmarked, 20th century, shaped rectangular and embossed with figural scenes and trophies, operated by a lever formed as a bird to the front releasing an oval cover embossed with cherubs releasing a caged bird, revealing a pierced interior with a coloured feathered bird, the rear side with a hinged compartment for the key, 10.7cm (4.25in) wide, in a box with a key. See sale these rooms ‘Fine Jewellery, Watches, Silver & Objects of Vertu’ 6th October 2009, lot 85 for an example in the same pattern of case (£1,700 hammer price). In that example two typed notes were found inside the key compartment ‘Singing Bird Box by Karl Griesbaum Circa 1900’ and ‘Manufactured in Germany Wooden framed bellows painted yellow Trade mark:- Bird perched on mound with letters K G on either side (under bellows)’.
