A Victorian coromandel rectangular dressing box with vacant mother of pearl cartouche with hinged lid and fitted interior containing clear glass and silver plate mounted dressing set with further fitted jewellery drawer to lower section, height 18cm, width 28.5cm, depth 21.5cm (af).Additional InformationThe front lock plate has been lost, further significant loss to the veneer on the right section with further splits in numerous places, further scuffs, scrapes, scratches particularly to corners and edges, some rubbing and tarnish to the silver plate mounts, general wear to the bottles and jars, some small chips, fritting and nibbles. Interior generally tired, build up of dirt and dust particularly to the velvet lining in the jewellery drawer. The interior of the upper section has damage to the lid interior, front section where it meets the lock plate of the body, this part has three exposed screws which are also loose. The box will need some attention and restoration.
c1929, the signed white dial, 41mm diameter, with black Roman numerals, blued spade hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, hinged and signed front loading crown wind mechanical movement number 467093 with pictorially decorated ratchet wheel, crown wheel engraved 'Tempus Fugit', and winding bridge engraved 'jewelled', under a polished nickel dust cover, with pumpkin shaped winder, case, 48mm, by Dennison, numbered 467093, with Birmingham hallmarks for 9ct gold, gross weight 87.6g and presented in the original cardboard box and with the original guarantee paperwork dated 12/12/1932Footnote: The name 'Russell' has been associated with watchmaking in Lancashire since the early 19th century and Thomas Russell (1780-1830) was the founding father of this 6 generation watchmaking dynasty. Having changed premises a number of times, in 1877 the business moved to Cathedral Works, 12 Church Street, Liverpool, with extra workplaces at Piccadilly in London and Toronto in Canada. In 1880, they were listed as “watch and chronometer producers and machine made keyless lever and jewellery retailers” and moreover, “by Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and the Admiralty”. At this time, the wealth of Liverpool exceeded that of London and the company became extremely successful and well known as producers of fine quality timepieces. The company ceased trading in 1994.
