Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and others created all manner of objects such as cigarette cases, necessaires, lipstick holders and compacts in a variety of precious materials such as jade, lapis lazuli and enamel, and were regarded as the epitome of French taste. These objects were often unique in design, created specifically to client`s designs. During the Art Deco period, these accessories may have the simple geometric motifs associated with the Art Deco style, or might fuse these motifs wuith more exotic influences from Persia, China, Japan and Eqypt. The box offered here is a wonderful example of the latter, combining the Persian influenced bird of paradise with geometric patterns.Literature:Neret, G., `Boucheron`, Rizzoli, New York, p 109 -110Raulet, S., `Art Deco Jewellery`, London 1985, see pp. 270 - 303 for a discussion of Art Deco accessories and necessaires made by the major French Ateliers, and p. 291, 294 and 298 for similar lapis lazuli boxes by Van Cleef & Arpels, Janesich and Ostertag.
