19th-20th century AD. A group comprising: a wooden jewellery box with silk linking, brass hinges and lock, working with key; a steel Hobbs & Co., London cash box with hinged lid, lift-out tray with three lidded compartments, separate chamber beneath, sturdy handle attached with eight screws, working lock with key. 2.5 kg, 17.5x12x7.5-22x14x10.5cm (7 x 4 3/4 x 3 - 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 4"). [2, No Reserve] Fine condition, usage wear.
An early 20th century burr walnut vanity box with mother of pearl decoration and escutcheon, the hinged lid enclosing a sectioned pull out tray, width 30cm, a small mahogany jewellery box with recessed brass carrying handle and escutcheon, the hinged lid enclosing sectioned tray above glass fall front and two small drawers, width 21cm, and a sarcophagus shaped tea caddy, width 27.5cm (af) (3). CONDITION REPORT: Water damage to the top of the box with glass front. This same box has losses to veneer around the base. Caddy: Lacking interior. Split to side of the lid of jewellery box.
A collection of various lacquer and papier-mâché boxes including a chinoiserie decorated jewellery box, 30 x 18 x 13cm, two Japanese miniature table cabinets, a group of heart shaped trinket boxes, and other similar examples, also a pair of small bone brassbound boxes, a pair of straw boxes, a Sorrento style money box, a music box modelled as a guitar etc.
A quantity of silver and costume jewellery including an amethyst and silver pendant on chain, a silver gilt medallion on silver gilt chain, Ciro pearls with a platinum clasp, in original box, other necklaces, etc, and a quantity of commemorative crowns, football tokens and cigarette cards contained in a trinket box.
Of Olympic and fencing Interest- A collection of pre and post war German fencing trophies and medallions presented to Elizabeth Graser:, the medals dating between the 1930s to the early 1950s, including her 1936 Berlin Olympic competitor's badge number '2660', also a copy of 'Die Olympischen Spiele 1936' in original case, a rosewood and oynx jewellery box with cold painted foil and mask decoration and a copy of 'The Sword' October 1991 with a biography of Elizabeth Graser. *Note- Born in Austria and half Jewish, Elizabeth Graser married a German Army officer at the age of 23. After three years of marriage, he died of septicemia and left her the shop in Vienna that sold all types of fencing equipment and weaponry. She continued to fence and was selected to represent Austria in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where she reached the final. In 1939 she accepted papers to leave Austria and left for England with few possessions among which was her fencing kit. Her skill and reputation was well known amongst the fencing world as the Woman in Black, which she often wore while competing, even after she retired at the age of 74 she was still cable of teaching over eager fencers a lesson in skill and accuracy. She became involved with Wimbledon Fencing Club and in turn was a good friend of Derek Sweeney who was National Coach for the National Paraplegic Olympic squad. * Provenance: Elizabeth Graser to Derek Sweeney.
A LIMOGES PORCELAIN GILT-METAL-MOUNTED JEWELLERY BOX of hinged square form, the domed cover and body decorated with foliate designs and scrolling gilt and cobalt borders, raised on gilt animal paw feet, painted marks to base. 7.5cm(h) x 12cm(w) x 12cm(d) CONDITION: Some wear, possibly glued to base, but generally ok.
