Pyxide; Apulia, 4th century BC.Black pottery with white and red figures.Provenance: European private collection.Thermoluminescence test attached.Measurements: 24 x 22.5 cm (diameter).Ovoid pyxide with a small circular base on which the body is structured. The lower part of the piece is decorated with a fretwork of rhythmically repeating palmettes, while the upper part, located between the palmettes, is decorated with a figurative scene. It shows the presence of a robed woman, turning her face, holding a sceptre in one hand and a vessel in the other. Finally, the piece ends in a knob-shaped top that allows the piece to be opened. The pixis or pyxside is a type of Greek pottery in the form of a box with a lid, used by women to contain cosmetics, jewellery and other objects. Derived from the Corinthian box, it originated in Athens in the Proto-Geometric period. The value placed on these works made them the subject of a flourishing trade and industry. The pottery painters and the masters who made the pieces in clay were highly esteemed in ancient Greece. This piece comes from the region of Apulia in southern Italy, where Daunia, now the province of Foggia, and Messapia, in the southern part of the region, are located. From 320 BC onwards Athens no longer exported pottery, and only a few vessels were produced as prizes for athletes in the Panathenaeans. Pottery from the Italic Peninsula took the place of Athenian pottery on the Mediterranean market.
