He tries to create a dilemma between the two aspects of utility and aesthetics in each piece he makes, sometimes incorporating spiked forms as illustrated with this ladle.

He worked for Tiffany & Co. in the late 1870s after he moved to America, and was suggested to have helped design the celebrated Olympian pattern. Shortly afterwards he moved to Gorhams. Fountainebleau was his first design for them, depicting characters from the court of Francis I.
