Two George II Silver Cream-Boats, one by Edward Wakelin, London, 1758, The Other by John Parker and Edward Wakelin, Circa 1758, each oval boat-shaped and on three fluted feet, with reeded handle and gadrooned rim, engraved with a crest within the Garter of the Order of the Bath and below a duke's coronet, one engraved underneath with a scratch weight '9=5', 14.5cm wide, 16oz 5dwt (2) The crest is that of Powlett, for Charles Powlett, 5th Duke of Bolton (c.1718-1765). Provenance: Presumably commissioned by Charles, 5th Duke of Bolton, on succeeding his father as Duke of Bolton in October 1759. While the title passed to Charles' brother in 1765 the 5th Duke left his fortune, and presumably the present sauceboats, to his illegitimate daughter Jean Mary Browne-Powlett who married Thomas Orde. Orde was later to assume, by Royal license, the surname Powlett. When Charles' brother died in 1794 without male issue the Dukedom of Bolton became extinct and Orde was created Baron Bolton Like one of the two present sauceboats an epergne, now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (E. Alcorn, English Silver in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, vol. II, Boston, 2000, pp. 188-190) by John Parker and Edward Wakelin is also marked with maker's mark only. It is dated to circa 1760 (H. Clifford, Silver in London The Parker and Wakelin Partnership 1760-1776, New Haven, 2004, pp 11-12) and like the present Sauceboats it is engraved for the Duke of Bolton and with the Order of the Bath. The Parker and Wakelin ledgers after 1760 do not exist but the earlier ledgers do show other silver ordered by the Duke of Bolton, '... including a ladle, an orange strainer and a mug' (Alcorn, op cit., p. 190). . The first cream-boat is fully marked underneath and further engraved with scratch weight ''9=5'. The marks are generally clear on this one. The second cream boat is marked underneath with maker's mark only twice. There is also the remains of an engraved scratch weight which is possible '8=0'. The marks are very worn on this with only a part of each visible. There is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points and to the engraving. There are some bruises and pin dents.
