George Bernard O'Neill RA (1828-1917) - Figures beside a doorway, with children purchasing toys from a street vendor, other figures nearby with utensils in the foreground inscribed with the artist's name on a plaque attached to the frame, oil on canvas, 28" x 25" - **The artist was born in Dublin and arrived in England in 1837, he was quickly accepted at The Royal Academy Schools in 1845 and was a successful student regularly exhibiting at The Royal Academy from 1847 onwards, he became a member of The Cranbrook Colony of Painters, his in Kent 'Old Wilsley House' became the setting for many of O'Neill's paintings. The artist style was similar to that of Thomas Webster and Frederick Daniel Hardy (see Lot 721), the close relationship between O'Neill and Hardy can be judged from their paintings 'The Surprise' where Hardy painted the interior and O'Neill the figure (now in The Wolverhampton Art Gallery) - ** From the estate of Ted Watkinson
