Lots 22 to 36A single owner collection of 'Chelsea Toys'The following 15 lots were collected by Hugh Marsham Townshend (1878-1967). They comprise mainly of ‘Chelsea Toys’, which include scent bottles and bonbonnieres. The Chelsea Porcelain works was founded in the 1740s and many of the ‘toys’ were accepted as being by this factory. However, in the 1920s, another source was suggested - the short-lived ‘Girl in a Swing’ factory is now thought to also have produced a large number of these ‘toys’. The books referred to are important works in this field, but there can be some doubt as to which factory produced which item. The collection comes with an interesting list, compiled in 1961, noting who they were bought from and referenced to one of the books. (Please note that not all of the items on the list are in the sale). Sources include some of the major porcelain dealers of the 1940s and 50s.The Irwin Untermyer Collection is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.C
