IVES CLOCKWORK SEESAW. A classic American clockwork toy from the 1880s time period depicting a metronome type action. A triangular shaped base containing a clockwork mechanism and fancifully decorated with stenciling and flowers. A wooden plank featuring a boy on one end and a girl on the other proceed with a seesaw type action when mechanism is wound. An interesting and almost hypnotic toy when in action that is rarely found and sought after by collectors of early American clockwork toys. This particular example still retains a black paper label on the seesaw, however with 100+ years of age, lettering has become somewhat indecipherable. Overall condition is very good-plus. The figures dressed in their fabric outfits (possibly redressed many years ago), feature painted tin or brass faces that retain much of their original painted finish. SIZE: 18"" long. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-13894
8"" ARTICULATED CLOCKWORK DOCTOR`S CART. This toy is a bit of an oddity as toys this size are rarely clockwork as well as having articulation to the horse. The gentleman is seated in the cart with the clockwork motor on the underside of the cart. When the toy is wound, it proceeds forward and the heart shaped wheel, connected to a wire enables the horse to gallop. Direction of the cart can be controlled by altering the pivoting front assembly, allowing the cart to go straight or in a circle. SIZE: 8"" l. CONDITION: Overall good with only the red coloring showing a fair amount of paint enhancement/touch-up. 1-14204
ALTHOF BERGMAN HORSE ON A CLOCKWORK WHEELED BASE. A large Early American tin running horse affixed to a clockwork base similar in nature to the patriotic bell toy (see Julia`s Malcolm Deisenroth Sale; 6/30/2010; Lot 3042) or to the more often seen Althof Bergman Boy on Tricycle. The toy features a brown horse attached by an A-frame armature connecting to the covered clockwork mechanism. A separate wire attached to an eccentric gear on the mechanism and the horse enables the horse to roll along on the floor in a galloping type manner. As was normal for this time period toy companies utilized all aspects of the various pieces and parts they had on hand. The front wheeled fork of this toy was used on the Goodwin Walker toy and as discussed above the clockwork mechanism was used on several different toys. Due to a lack of manufacturer catalogs/jobber sheets displaying the variety of different toys available will let collectors today often find unlisted toys that are found in attics or tucked away in old time collections such as in this case. SIZE: 10"" l x 8-1/4"" h. CONDITION: Overall very good original condition with some in-painting to red clockwork mechanism covering and re-soldering/paint touch-up to horse at the ""A""-frame/saddle area. 1-14200
PAIR OF EARLY AMERICAN TIN HORSES ON PLATFORMS. Larger of the two is mounted on a fanciful sculptured tin base. The smaller horse with a pale gray finish is mounted to a simple painted tin base. Both horses are pull toys employing cast iron spoke wheels for the child to push along the floor. SIZE: 6-1/2"" and 4"" l, respectively. CONDITION: Larger horse has older amateur repair attaching horse to base. Overall fair to good. Smaller horse is in good original condition. 1-14210
EARLY 20"" LIVE STEAM MARKLIN PLEASURE/RIVERBOAT. Typical of the Marklin firm they made a variety of toys from the later part of the 18th century through the mid 20th century that by today`s standards were excellent quality, intrinsically pleasing and highly sought after by collectors today. This particular example circa 1910 is of a pleasure boat the ""Priscilla"" that would have traveled in real life, the lakes and rivers of the world. The Marklin firm utilized 3 methods of propulsion, a clock work mechanism, an electric motor powered by battery and in this case a live steam motor. Oftentimes because of the live steam method and being in water the boat after 100+ years would be in poor finish and thus as in this case needing restoration. This particular boat has been fully restored to its original glory and quite possibly their might be a few replacement parts such as the masts and or lifeboats? Expert restoration including some wear and grazing to the paint give the impression that the boat actually is in remarkable original finish. Back in the day this was quite an expensive toy and it is hard to believe that this was actually a play toy for a male youth. Typical of Marklin so much attention paid to the details, including the striped deck, funnels, lifeboats, etc. A wonderful item for a collector and at only a fraction of the price of one in pristine original finish! SIZE: 20"" long. CONDITION: Expert older restoration. Boat including steam plant appear to be intact and complete, lacking only the rear flat on stern of boat. 1-13651

GUNTHERMANN WIND UP BASS PLAYER. Gunthermann during the earlier part of the 20th century manufactured a prolific amount of wind up toys with a variety of different subjects or themes. This particular toy depicts a top hatted black dude standing atop of a trapezoidal base playing his musical instrument but when the mechanism is wound his right arm proceeds to activate the bow while his top hat tips and dips upon his head. Painted in vibrant colors this black gentlemen has a somewhat comical look about his face and the toy itself speaks of the political, economical and social climate of the time period, but then again toys for many years were always based on these factors. SIZE: 9-1/2"" t. CONDITION: Overall paint is fair to good with some weak areas that certainly could use some enhancement. Wire extending from body and connecting to arm is loose and needs a dab of glue or a touch of solder to adhere arm to said wire. 1-13719
GUNTHERMANN PIG WITH CLOWN RIDER. Hand-painted tin windup showing rollicking wild pig with colorfully dressed clown riding aboard. Hand-soldered early tin toy with cast wheels. SIZE: 5-1/2"" l.
