Erstausgabe des Berichts über die Jaquet-Droz-Automaten. - KVK: kein Exemplar in Deutschland, BL London, Schweizerische Nationalbibl. - Tls. unbeschnitten u. unaufgeschnitten, durchgehend stockfleckig. First edition of the report on the Jaquet-Droz automata. - Contemp. wrappers with printed title and ornamental border (rubbed, somewhat brownstained and bumped, corners creased). - The Jaquet-Droz automata are among the numerous automata built by the Jaquet-Droz family. They are three doll automata built between 1768 and 1774 by Pierre Jaquet-Droz, his son Henri-Louis and Jean-Frédéric Leschot: the musician, the draughtsman and the writer. They are considered the distant ancestors of modern computers. The automata were designed and built as promotional and entertainment toys to increase the sales of clocks among the European aristocracy in the 18th century. The musician is depicted as an organist playing a real, specially made instrument by pressing the keys with her fingers. The draughtsman is modelled on a small child and can draw four different pictures: a portrait of Louis XV, a royal couple, a dog with the inscription "Mon toutou" ("my little dog") and a scene in which Cupid drives a chariot pulled by a butterfly. The writer - the most complex of the three automata - can write any text with up to 40 letters. - Partly uncut and untrimmed, foxing throughout.
