A collection of Frank Whittington `The Forest Toys` carved and painted farm animals:, to include cows, horses, sheep, pigs etc, also together with a note from the vendor stating that they were purchased 1935-38 from Brockenhurst. *Biography Frank Whittington (1876-1973) established a toy making firm at the end of World War One in the New Forest, making carved animals and people, inspired by his surroundings and from regular trips to London Zoo and the Natural History Museum. Originally making the toys from home the demand became such that in 1922 he built a factory on the edge of the New Forest and employed a staff of 22 people. The popularity of the figures rose when Queen Mary ordered two dozen Noah`s Arks after seeing them at the British Industries Fairs during the inter war period. Often commissioned to make models of clients dogs and pets he also made several nativity scenes for the local churches. The factory closed at the outbreak of World War II due to the lack of materials from America and his staff joining the war effort
