A. Dunington (19th century) Shamrock II and III reversing on The Clyde signed, dated July 1903, titled to verso, oil on canvas, 34cm x 44cm Provenance: the vendor`s grandfather, Professor Earl Judson King, Professor of Biochemistry at the London School of Medicine, previously worked with Sir Frederick Banting and Dr John Robert Ross in Canada, hence becoming good friends with both men and receiving the paintings as gifts. Sir Frederick Grant Banting, KBE, MC, FRS, FRSC (1891-1941) was a Canadian medical scientist and Nobel laureate, noted as one of the main discoverers of insulin. He developed in interest in painting in 1921 whilst living in London, Ontario. He became friends with two "Group of Seven" artists, A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris and shared their admiration of the inspiring Canadian landscape. He joined them on sketching trips to Quebec in 1927 and also to other parts of Canada. A lot of their work was painted on birch panels, hence a complete return to nature.Dr John Robert Ross, M.D, (1901-1994), B.Sc. under Dr Frederick Banting and close associate. He made a significant discovery in 1933 that children were being poisoned by exposure to lead on cribs and toys which lead to the banning of the use of such paint. He also shared this love of the Canadian outdoors and emulated "Group of Seven" style in his many paintings.
