•WILHELMINA BARNS-GRAHAM, CBE (1912-2004) THE TOY SHOP, THE DIGEY, ST. IVES Signed and dated 1944-?5 (amended by the artist from 1944), pencil with touches of coloured crayon 50 x 63.5cm. * The toy workshop, located in a narrow passage off the Digey, struck the artist as a superb theme for a painting: "the little toys were in bright reds, yellows and greens and Van Gogh would have loved them", though "the smell of paint and varnish under that low ceiling was awful." The woman in the picture is Susan Lethbridge, wife of Bryan Wynter, and she is alongside the artist Tom Early. Exhibited: Penzance, Newlyn Art Gallery, Retrospective 1940-1989 (1989-1990, also visiting Edinburgh, Pert, St Andrews and Ayr); Penzance, Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Women Artists in Cornwall, March-April 2002, no.123 ++ Pin holes at corners; some wear, handling creases and small tears at edges; a few spots of foxing
