Mid 17th-mid 18th century AD. A hemispherical pewter toy pocket watch with loop and suspension ring; hole to the underside, dial with inner band of hours in Roman numerals (I to XII) and outer band of minutes in groups of five (5 to 60); central plaque with floral ornament and maker's name 'HUX', 'LONDON'. Cf. Forsyth, C. & Egan, G. Toys, Trifles & Trinkets. Base-Metal Miniatures from London 1200-1800, London, 2005, p. 340ff. The maker, William Hux, was a prominent toy maker who was a member of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers in the early 18th century; his metal was the subject of some disputes in the Court Minutes between 1703 and 1715. 40 grams, 64mm (2 1/2"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1980s. "Fair condition, case cracked, pointer absent."
