Lots 34-35, 55-58, 92-95, 279-308, 334-343 and 378-406. Ted Laker was born in Streatham on 4th February 1901. He went to Bloxham School near Banbury and then on to the Crystal Palace School of Engineering. He worked for George Wimpey at various places and after this became an AA ‘scout’ first on a bicycle and then on a motorcycle. He was probably in the AA up until the Second World War and then moved back into civil engineering, when he was involved in building Heathrow Airport and the Newton Abbott Bypass. He then owned the village shop and Post Office at Cliddesden, Hampshire, from 1945 to 1948; for the rest of his working life he was at Thornycroft, the commercial vehicle manufacturer, in Basingstoke. He seems to have collected models from when he first earned a wage until he got married and then again when he was living on his own. He had a lifelong love of engineering and he was fascinated with steam and steam power as well as with boats, memorably going on a trip to Lundy from Ilfracombe on the paddle steamer ‘Waverley’. As with many collectors, his fascination seems to have been in owning these models rather than taking them out of their boxes and playing with them.
