A rare late 18th Century ivory shuttle French, probably Dieppe, the upper face pierced and carved with a young lady on a terrace carrying a basket of fruit within garlands of flowers, ribbands and scrolls on a trellis ground, the obverse plain save for a panel of two diamonds, 16.5 x 4.2cm A very similar shuttle is illustrated in Whiting (G) Old-Time Tools and Toys of Needlework Page 244 then in the collection of Mrs De Witt Clinton Cohen, New York It is likely that this shuttle was originally composed of two corresponding panels and that the plain obverse is a replacement. The pierced and carved face has some minor loss and old repairs, the fragility of shuttles of this nature mean survival is very rare.
