Chamberlains Worcester armorial dish, 19th century, decorated at the centre with the arms, supporters and crests of Sir John Doyle, GCB, KCH [1756-1834] with the motto 'Fortitudine Vincit' (He conquers by strength), underglaze Chamberlains Worcester mark to base, 24 cm diameter General Sir John Doyle, 1st Baronet, entered the 48th Regiment of Foot as an Ensign, serving in the American War of Independence. He was present at a number of actions, including the Battle of Germantown where he was wounded. Doyle raised the 87th Foot [Royal Irish Fusiliers] for service against Revolutionary France in 1793, and this Regiment was present at The Battle of Barrosa in March 1811 where they captured a French Eagle. .
