Edward Thompson Davis (British, 1833-1867)Portrait of a woman with a hoop earring, en faceOil on paper17 x 12.5cmSigned with monogram 'ED' to the leftEdward Thompson Davis trained at the Birmingham School of Design alongside Edward Burne-Jones, and perhaps it was through this exposure that his works developed under a strong Pre-Raphaelite influence. He also collaborated with Benjamin Williams Leader, painting the figures for his landscapes. Thompson exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1854, but his submissions were cut short in 1867 when he fell victim to the cholera outbreak in Rome at the age of thirty-four. Thompson's exhibited genre scenes were complemented by the privately commissioned portraits, executed for various patrons and friends in Worcester. The three female portraits presented here come from a single collection with a connection to the artist, and are a testament to his ability to skilfully capture sitters even on an intimately small scale.
