An unusual Kerr and Binns or early Royal Worcester reticulated tazza, circa 1865In an unglazed parian body, finely pierced with a wide graduated honeycomb band, with gilt decoration and four small panels reserving colourful insects, a tooled gold sprig to the centre of a ring of ivy leaves, the border with gilt holly leaf sprigs with red berries, mounted on an elaborate gilt-metal base with pierced honeycomb foot echoing the design of the porcelain, 20.8cm diamFootnotes:The shape follows a Chamberlain prototype exhibited at the Great Exhibition. The new management of Kerr and Binns was keen to introduce a new parian body and revived a few of Chamberlains more adventurous shapes. A Royal Worcester model of HRH Princess Elizabeth riding 'Tommy', introduced 1949Modelled by Doris Lindner, the Princess mounted side-saddle, wearing the uniform of Colonel-in-chief of the Grenadier Guards, depicted on the occasion of the Trooping the Colour in honour of the King's birthday, June 12, 1947, her reins and baton gathered in one hand, with wooden plinth, 31.5cm high excluding plinth, base inscribed 'Doris Lindner', factory mark and title in gold, number 17 of 100 (2)Footnotes:Produced as a Limited Edition of just 100 models, numbers 1 and 2 were presented to the then Princess Elizabeth and her mother, Queen Elizabeth. This became the most sought after of the equestrian figures produced by Royal Worcester, particularly so as post-war restrictions at the time meant rich ornamental pieces could only be sold for export and most were shipped to Commonwealth countries. The present lot has been consigned for sale from Australia.The complete process of manufacturing was recorded in a film made in 1950. The Doctor Ordered Clay showed Doris Linder creating the original model, Bob Bradley cutting the sculpture into pieces for mould-making, and Harry Davis painting the Princess's face and uniform. A Flight Worcester plate from the first Duke of Clarence service, circa 1789The scalloped edge painted with an elaborate border formed from entwined bands in blue and green ribbon enclosing Orders of the Garter, St Andrew and the Thistle, together with sprigs of roses and thistles, the central royal arms of the Duke of Clarence hung with the Order of St Andrew flanked by laurel and oak leaves, 24.3cm diam, marked 'Flight' with a crown and crescent in underglaze blueFootnotes:This was the first royal armorial service made at Worcester. George III had visited Flights the previous year and possibly the King encouraged his son, Prince William Henry, to order a set to commemorate his having been awarded the Order of the Thistle along with the title 'Duke of Clarence and St Andrews'. In 1789 the Duke also retired from active service as a Rear Admiral and this perhaps inspired the choice of a central victory wreath featuring oak leaves, a reference to the British Navy. Another plate from the service was sold by Bonhams on 23 June 2021, lot 243. See also an example from the Ewers-Tyne Collection of Worcester porcelain at Cheekwood, illustrated and discussed in John Sandon's catalogue (2008), p.98, no.60.
