Lot 534

A Royal Worcester model of HRH Princess Elizabeth riding 'Tommy', circa 1950 Modelled by Doris Lindner, the Princess wearing the uniform of Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards, mounted side-saddle, her reins and baton gathered in one hand, on an ebonised wooden plinth, 31.5cm high excluding plinth, printed marks in gold, modeller's name and title, edition number partially erased (2) Footnotes: Produced as a Limited Edition of just 100 models, numbers 1 and 2 were presented to the then Princess Elizabeth and her mother, Queen Elizabeth. The young Princess had captured the nation's heart when she stood in for her father at the Trooping of the Colour in honour of the King's birthday on 12 June 1947. This became the most sought after of the equestrian figures produced by Royal Worcester, particularly so as post-war restrictions at the time meant rich ornamental pieces could only be sold for export and most were shipped to Commonwealth countries. The complete process of manufacturing was recorded in a film made in 1950. 'The Doctor Ordered Clay' showed Doris Linder creating the original model, Bob Bradley cutting the sculpture into pieces for mould-making, and Harry Davis painting the Princess's face and uniform. Harry recalled his anxiety when he visited Buckingham Palace to study the colouring of her hair and uniform, and how the young princess chatted with him and put him at ease. The following year, when the Princess visited Royal Worcester to open the new museum, she particularly asked to meet Harry Davis again and asked him to conduct her around the factory. She watched Bob Bradley assemble one of the figures from multiple moulded parts and hoped that he would be able to put her back together again in the right order. Not long afterwards, in 1952, Harry Davis was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to China Painting. A similar model was sold by Bonhams on 10 June 2003, lot 269, together with an original plaster maquette for the model, lot 276. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 527

A massive pair of Royal Worcester vases and covers by Harry Davis, dated 1921In traditional French style, the ovoid bodies applied with scroll handles with leaf moulded details, the necks and feet with fluted panels, the deep blue ground very richly decorated in raised-paste gilding, the scrollwork ornament including a network of caillouté enclosing urn-shaped patterae on the reverse, the full front panels painted by Harry Davis with extensive landscapes in the manner of Claude, both signed 'H Davis', 68.5cm high, printed puce marks with date codes for 1921, shape number 2454 (4)Footnotes:While an apprentice at the Royal Worcester factory, a young Harry Davis was fascinated by a book in the works library on the paintings of Claude. Davis imagined the true colouring and developed his own palate, giving Claude's landscapes his own unique atmosphere with an outstanding sense of perspective. Because of the high production cost, there were few orders for the largest size version of shape 2454. Davis would have been thrilled by the chance to create a matching pair, with two huge Claude landscapes that complement each other, framed with such splendid raised gilding. For a publicity photograph taken around 1920, Harry Davis posed next to a similar vase, proudly holding his paintbrush even though the vase had already been fired and gilded. This magnificent pair belonged to a private collection of Royal Worcester porcelain offered by Christie's on 8 November 1993. Henry Sandon had advised the collectors and in his forward to the 1993 auction catalogue, he described these vases as 'the most superb painting you can imagine by the greatest ceramic artist of this century'.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 481

A fine Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester coffee beaker or zarf, circa 1835Thinly potted and on a turned foot, the oval panels with coloured portraits of Fatteh Ali Shah, King of Persia and Abbas Mirza, Prince Royal of Persia, alternating with panels of colourful flower vases, the white ground between gilded with stars and with bright gold dentil borders, 6.2cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceThe Charles Dawson CollectionA similar example from the Lord and Lady Flight Collection was sold by Bonhams on 30 November 2022, lot 444. Two more are illustrated by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), p.85, fig.8.16. Worcester's portraits of the late Shah and Crown Prince of Persia derive from Travels in Georgia, Persia, Armenia, Ancient Babylon &c. &c. during the years 1817, 1818, 1819 and 1820 by Sir Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842), engraved by William Thomas Fry (1789-1843) and published in 1821. Flight, Barr and Barr issued medallions, cabinet cups and a number of these distinctive zarfs as memorial items for the Iranian market. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 482

A magnificent pair of Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester Warwick vases by Thomas Baxter, circa 1814-16The campana shaped vases with gadrooned rims and two gilt twisted vine branch handles, applied with bands of white pearls and finely gilt acanthus leaf borders below, the bases and square pedestal feet with rose-pink grounds, painted by Thomas Baxter with theatrical subjects all around, each side showing a different scene, the subjects identified with titles and quotations in Baxter's distinctive black script, 24.8cm and 25.2cm high (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceBonhams, 1 May 2013, lot 128Charles Dawson CollectionIllustrated by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), p.115, fig.10.29.The scenes and characters are identified by the artist:DOUGLAS Act IVNorval: Art thou my mother? Ever let me kneel.TWO GENTLEMEN of VERONA Act V Sc.IVVal: Ruffian, let go that rude uncivil touch.AS YOU LIKE IT Act IV. Sc.IIIOliver. Many will swoon when they do look on blood.DOUGLAS Act VLord R.. The mother and her son. how curst I am!The scene from Two Gentlemen of Verona is based on a print after Thomas Stothard RA that appears in Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. First published in 1805, Boydell's Gallery was a source used by Baxter and other artists at both Flight's and Chamberlain's factories. The scenes from John Home's Douglas have not yet been identified from any published print source and it is possible that Thomas Baxter has created these images himself. The character of Young Norval in Home's play became synonymous with William Henry West Betty (1791-1874), who was the greatest child actor of the age. Also known as 'Master Betty' or as 'The Young Roscius', Betty first performed the role of Norval in Ireland, and again at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, but it was his debut at Covent Garden Theatre on 1 December 1804 that caused the greatest sensation. Huge crowds queued for hours to get a glimpse of the child star, the Young Roscius. Guards and constables had to beat back the crowds, as hoards flooded inside to find seats. The boxes were invaded and people were trampled. We know that Thomas Baxter was there to record the event, and luckily in the mayhem he managed to hang on to his pencils and paper. A sketch made from life appeared in an album of Baxter's theatrical drawings kept at The Garrick Club. Although the album is presently missing, a photocopy records one small sketch which bears a long inscription in Thomas Baxter's hand. The artist identifies his drawing as'Douglas, 1804 Master Betty aged 13 (originally called the Young Roscius) as young Norval. He was engaged.... to play 20 nights at 100£ each night & to have a benefit which the house was to make 1200£'.As he painted the two scenes from Douglas on this impressive pair of Flight, Barr and Barr vases, Baxter was probably thinking about the memorable performance he had witnessed at Covent Garden ten years previously. The figure of Norval, here, may possibly be a depiction of The Young Roscius, Master Betty. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A fine Royal Worcester reticulated vase by George Owen, dated 1918Of Persian shape, the tapering body intricately pierced with bands of honeycomb and geometric design, picked out with raised gilt dots, the slender neck with pierced panels above a band of white 'pearls' and delicate gilding, the rim, 'wishbone' handles and circular foot also elaborately pierced and gilded, 15cm high, printed mark in gold, incised signature 'G Owen', gilder's number 61Footnotes:The intricacy of George Owen's piercing on porcelain is frankly astonishing and the aesthetic appeal is matched by the joy in handling something so feather-light. Owen had a special arrangement with the Royal Worcester factory in which his pieces were sold to them individually, before they were gilded and then sold on often many years later, see John Sandon, Investigating George Owen: The Lydia Starr Collection, Ars Ceramica, No.24 (2008), pp.14-5. George III had visited Flights the previous year and possibly the King encouraged his son, Prince William Henry, to order a set to commemorate his having been awarded the Order of the Thistle along with the title 'Duke of Clarence and St Andrews'. In 1789 the Duke also retired from active service as a Rear Admiral and this perhaps inspired the choice of a central victory wreath featuring oak leaves, a reference to the British Navy. Another plate from the service was sold by Bonhams on 23 June 2021, lot 243. See also an example from the Ewers-Tyne Collection of Worcester porcelain at Cheekwood, illustrated and discussed in John Sandon's catalogue (2008), p.98, no.60.
