James Caulfield, 1st Earl of Charlemont KP PC (Ire), Irish statesman (1728-1799), was born in Dublin and had a passion for classical culture having spent nine years on a Grand Tour in Italy, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. After his return to Dublin he employed the Scottish architect Sir William Chambers to remodel his main residence Marino House into a unique neo-classical garden pavilion building, the Casino at Marino. He was also the first president of the Royal Academy and in 1793 was made a founding Knight of the Order of St Patrick.
