Nicholas Chevalier, (1828-1902) - Oil on canvas - Lake Manapouri, South Island, New Zealand, a view past Mahara Island towards Cathedral Peaks, with two indigenous Maori figures and their dog beside a canoe at the water's edge to the foreground, signed and dated 1882 lower left, 60cm x 90cm,in later gilt frameDeceased estate, Poole, Dorset.Born in St Petersburg, the son of a Swiss father and Russian mother, Chevalier studied art and architecture in Rome, Lausanne, London and Munich. A fountain was designed by him for the grounds of Queen Victoria's Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Having then been naturalised in England, he travelled to Australia in 1855 and married Caroline Wilkie in Melbourne in 1857. Chevalier arrived in New Zealand at Dunedin in November 1865, first travelling around the South Island, and returned to Melbourne in August 1866. He returned to New Zealand in late 1868, and again in April-May 1869, this time alongside the Duke of Edibnburgh aboard the Galatea. The Duke's party with Chevalier travelled onward to Tahiti, Hawaii and Japan.Chevalier is known to have produced lithographic prints of Lake Manapouri in 1881. Bridgman Art Library online records an 1882 watercolour of Lake Manapouri by Chevalier.

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, South Africa 1901 (717 Cpl. A. Poole, R.A.M.C. Mil:) rank officially corrected, good very fine, rare to unit £140-£180 --- A. Poole served during the Boer War with the Militia Medical Staff, Royal Army Medical Corps. The roll taken at Newcastle on 26 August 1901 lists five personnel serving at No. 14 General Hospital, the recipient’s entry adding: ‘To S/S ‘Montrose’ for duty 20.4.01.’
