2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) - Discovery Pod Concept ModelA Discovery pod concept model from Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The spaceship Discovery had several EVA pods, and Drs. Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Poole (Gary Lockwood) met in one to prevent HAL from hearing their conversation. This wooden model was constructed during the concept stage of the production and provided a basis for miniature models and the full-size craft used during the shoot. The concept model can be seen in a production still showing the pod in the art department next to Stanley Kubrick on page 383 of The Stanley Kubrick Archives, edited by Alison Castle. Very few items from the production have survived to the present day, as many were destroyed after the production wrapped. This model was a vital part of the visual effects process, which created landmark effects, considered excellent to this day.Painted white, the model has hand-drawn pencil markings indicating the positioning of lights and additional details, some of which are seen in the final iteration created for filming, indicating that this model was a significant tool in the development of the design for the pod. The model has wear from age and use, with sections of the wood exposed at the front, and chips and additional markings all over. It sits on a custom-made mirrored display stand, so its underside can be easily viewed. Dimensions (model): 27 cm x 29 cm x 27 cm (10 3/4" x 11 1/2" x 10 3/4") Estimate: £15,000 - 25,000 MThis lot will be auctioned on Thursday, November 3rd.
