BWM to 5159B Robert William Russell SMN RNR. Born Poole. Killed In Action on HMS Carmania (armed merchant Cruise Ship) 14th September 1914. HMS Carmania (ex Cunard) was involved in the famous WW1 Naval Battle that took place off Trinidad. The battle took place between two Cruise Liners that had been converted to Armoured Merchant Cruisers. The German ship was the Cap Trafalgar of the Hamburg South American Line. The Camania received 79 hits with several crew members loosing their lives, the action was commemorated by the British Navy League who presented her with a silver plate from Nelsons dinner service.
