Northern earthquake.- Porteus (Beilby, Bishop of Chester) A Letter to the inhabitants of Manchester, Macclesfield, and the adjacent parts, on occasion of the late earthquake in those places, first edition, foxed, lightly browned, contemporary wrappers, foxed, 12mo, Chester, Printed by J. Poole, Foregate-Street, [1777].⁂ A rare little work. The earthquake is estimated to have reached 4.4 on the Richter scale, and was widely felt in Manchester, Macclesfield, Preston, Wigan, and Stockport. There was no loss of life and only minor structural damage. Provenance: Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (couple of small marginal ink stamps).
Sutlej 1845-46, for Moodkee 1845, 3 clasps, Ferozeshuhur, Aliwal, Sobraon (Lieut Poole Gabbett 31st Regt.) edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise very fine £1,800-£2,200 --- Poole Gabbett was commissioned as an Ensign in the 31st Regiment on 22 April 1842, and purchased a Lieutenancy on 9 November 1843. He served throughout the campaign in the Sutlej and was present in the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur, Buddiwal, Aliwal and Sobraon, at which last he was severely wounded in the thigh by a musket ball (Medal with 3 Clasps). Gabbett retired on 12 April 1850, and died on 8 December 1863.

C.E.’, the first on pressed card, the second silver, the rest base metal, the last on the reverse of a ‘Seal of the City of Rochester’ medallion, generally good condition (6) £80-£100
