After Christian Daniel Rauch (German, 1777-1857): An early 19th century German cast iron figure of General Blücher probably cast at the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry, Berlin, circa 1825Probably cast at the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry, Berlin, circa 1825The figure clad in a swirling cloak stepping forward with raised left hand and brandishing his sword in his right beside a rustic free stump, the stump inscribed C R F, possibly for Christian Rauch, Fecit) on rectangular base, the iron with bronze patinated finish, 68cm highFootnotes:Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Fürst von Wahlstatt (1742-1819) was the Prussian General Feldmarschall who led his army against Napoleon at the Battle of the Nations, alongside Russian, Swedish and Austrian allies, at Leipzig in 1813 and at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.Following Napoleon's return from Elba, Blücher commanded the Army of the Lower Rhine. In the June 1815 campaign he sustained a serious defeat at Ligny on 16 June, just two days before the decisive battle at Waterloo. In the course of this battle he was seriously wounded but recovered sufficiently to rejoin his troops, despatching two corps to join Wellington and then led the remainder of his men, arriving on the battlefield in the late afternoon. With the battle hanging in the balance his army intervened with decisive and crushing effect; his vanguard drew off Napoleon's reserves and crushed the remains of French resistance leading the way to a decisive victory. The Prussians followed with a relentless pursuit of the retreating Armée du Nord.In the evening, after the battle, Wellington and Blücher met close to the inn at La Belle Alliance where Napoleon had abandoned his headquarters. During the meeting Blücher suggested the battle should be remembered as La Belle Alliance, to commemorate the European coalition formed to defeat the French Emperor. Wellington instead recommended Waterloo, the village just north of the battlefield, where he had spent the previous night, commenting that it would not do to name the battle after the Emperor's command post.Christian Daniel Rauch founded the Berlin school of sculpture and was the foremost German sculptor of the nineteenth century. This present lot is a reduced copy of a monumental statue cast in 1824 at the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry in Berlin, founded in 1804. The original was displayed in the city of Breslau. The use of iron, rather the more usual bronze used for public sculpture was utilised because it was considered more than just a sculptural material, being the very substance of the Prussian nation led by it Iron Chancellor.A copy of Rauch's figure of Blücher cast by the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry sculpture was acquired by the Earl of Clanwilliam on behalf of George IV in 1825 and is in the Royal Collection at Windsor. The Earl wrote to Sir William Knighton, the King's Private Secretary, that he had visited 'the iron foundry' in June of that year 'where I found the statue and pedestal of Blücher's monument at Breslau...' It was recorded as being received in London 17 September 1825 (Jutshams Receipts II 207) described as an 'iron cast of Blücher & pedestal' and was sent to the castle at the end of November 1828.Similar examples of this reduced model are in the collections at Corsham Court in Wiltshire and the Wellington Museum at Apsley House. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Full title: Flemish school, follower of Joos van Cleve (ca. 1485-1540), oil on panel, 16/17th C.: Hieronymus in his studyDescription: Dim.: 92,5 x 61,5 cm (the frame)Dim.: 70 x 42 cm (the painting)Ê St Jerome in a red cloak seated in his study, pointing at a skull. This depiction of St Jerome is an innovative solution in the iconography and forms of pictorial representation of the patron saint of Christian humanists. The Doctor of the Church is represented here by the powerful, concentrated and synthetic image of an old sage, melancholically meditating on death and the contingency of the human condition. Elements such as the clock in the background and the extinguished candle are reminders of the fragile nature of human existence. The iconographic convention was introduced in the Low Countries with the visit of Albrecht Dürer to Antwerp in 1520-1521. The archetype for the melancholic St Jerome was presented as a gift by the German artist to the secretary of the Portuguese merchants in Antwerp (Lisbon, Museu Nacional de arte Antiga). Joos van Cleve's workshop was the most prolific in producing copies of this composition for the Antwerp art market. Throughout the sixteenth century the theme and composition remained in high demand with upper-middle class art collectors.Ê Ref.: - M.J. Friedländer, 'Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. A small archive of research documents, letters and other printed ephemera compiled by Donald McCormick during the early 1960s in relation to his biography of Basil Zaharoff, Pedlar of Death, featuring various Autograph Letters Signed and Typed Letters Signed to McCormick from a variety of individuals including Mario Modiano, a researcher in Athens, discussing Zaharoff’s birth date and whether he is regarded as a patriot to the Greeks, providing notes on a talk with Theodore Petrakopoulos, general manager of the Grande Bretagne hotel which Zaharoff patronised, including details of an affair ‘with the wife of a degenerate Spanish duke…(who)….was a homosexual and went off each night with Athenian coachmen. There were two children but it is not clear whose they were, Z’s or the duke’s’, Rosita Forbes (commenting that ‘Zaharov was the most fantastic & absorbing person I’ve ever met. Lot No: 5 - Ref No: 027 The River Goddess By Nicky Beaumont Summer Holiday Home: The Peter Tavy Inn "My otter, in the form of the River Goddess, is at the top of the hierarchy of a river system and I wanted to create her as a regal and matriarchal figure. She is quite totemic with a cloak of river water flowing all around her and her young cub, in black, white, gold and silver. I have recently done a black and white design of an otter in lino print and wanted to incorporate some of my mark making ideas. I have worked on several different lino prints using the same elements of fish, waves, and the swirling motion of currents in water. To make things more interesting I have also incorporated other riverine creatures to be discovered when walking around the figure." This Otter is a 'Golden Otter' - one that has been specially selected by a panel of expert judges as being particularly stunning. Of the 81 Moor Otters there are only 25 Golden Otters. These Golden Otters will take their online bids to the live auction on Saturday, 2nd October 2021 at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood, Okehampton St, Exeter. You can continue to bid on these otters at the live auction in person or online.
Lot No: 49 - Ref No: 037 Two Ages of Otter By Jo Thompson Otters are fun and playful creatures and I wanted the design to reflect this. Their mothering instinct is attentive, loving and protective. As a mother myself I recognised those basic qualities of motherhood, wanting to portray this I used the cloak as a symbol in which the mother wraps herself and her baby up in. The fun element is the pattern on the cloak itself, with the majestic nature of the otter being reinforced by the heavy use of gold. Gustav Klimt, an artist who has always been an inspiration of mine, inspired this design, with this distinctive style set against splendour of the Moor, I hope it will bring pleasure to all that see them.
