127-151 A.D. Obv: PAO KANHPKI legend with Kanishka standing left, holding trident in left hand and sacrificing over altar to left. Rev: AQPO with Athsho (Hephaistos), bearded, standing left, wearing diadem and cloak with flames emanating from his shoulders, holding filleted diadem in right hand and tongs in left; tamgha in left field. ANS Kushan 459-462; Donum Burns 183; MK 772; Whitehead 92-96.16.46 grams. Ex David Harthill collection, UK.[No Reserve]
Circa 1550 A.D. Composed of a pair of recessed panels forming folding doors; the right panel with painted crucifixion scene depicting robed Mary, John the Evangelist and another apostle, angels collecting the blood in cups; the left panel with nude Adam and Eve with deceased reaching up towards resurrected Christ holding the standard of Victory in his left hand, two holy women, the myrrh bearers (Mary Magdalen and Mary, mother of Jesus) to the left. See Chojnacki, S., Major Themes in Ethiopian Painting, indigenous developments, the influence of foreign models and their adaptation, from the 13th to the 19th century, Wiesbaden, 1983, figs.39, 89, 90, 183, for similar Crucifixion and Resurrection scenes.499 grams, 24 cm high each (9 1/2 in.). Ex French private collection, 2000. Ex central London gallery. The icon shows the Western influence on Ethiopian art. The Crucificion image contains many elements of this iconography which are found in many Oriental and Western Art of Middle Ages, but with significant changes from the previous representations: Jesus is nailed with three nails and not four, the head leaning towards his right shoulder and the hair falling on his shoulders. Following the Western influence, Christ is represented in a spasm of physical pain, and consequently a more detailed anatomy of his chest and abdomen is depicted. This concept of the Crucifixion, common in the Italian Late Middle Age and Renaissance art, found its way to Ethiopia at some time towards the end of the 15th century, or at the beginning of the 16th century. Like in the majority of the Resurrection Icons of this period, Christ is dressed in a long robe with a cloak or toga draped over one shoulder. [No Reserve]
Basel, Switzerland, circa 1520 A.D. Shown beneath an arcade, offering his cloak on the end of his sword to the beggar at his feet; polychrome detailing; repaired with lead cames and held in a wooden frame. 1.8 kg, 49.5 cm, (54.5 cm including box) (19 1/2 - 21 1/2 in.). Ex old Swiss private collection. Ex central London gallery.[No Reserve]
Early 19th century A.D. Comprising a folded length of thin leather or vellum, with lines of Ge'ez text in black and red ink, coloured figural illuminations at the top depicting the winged Archangel Michael brandishing a sword, wearing a richly decorated lembd as a covering cloak. See Heldman, M., Munro-Hay Stuart, C., African Zion, The sacred art of Ethiopia, Yale University Press, 1993, pp.65, 72.32 grams, 35 cm (13 5/8 in.). Stephen Keynes collection (1927-2017). Ex central London gallery. Ethiopian phylacteries or parchment scrolls combined apotropaic prayers and images. These ‘magic scrolls’ utilise only a few designs that derive from Christian imagery, namely the holy rider, the sword-bearing angel Michael, and the cross. Here the text asks intervention and protection from Saint Michael, commander of the heavenly Host. Interestingly, the accoutrement of the Angel reflects that of the military Ethiopian elite in 19th century A.D. [No Reserve]
2nd-3rd century A.D. Displaying a figural scene in relief showing the Dioscuri, wearing a crested helmet and raising the right arm in salutation; the bust of Sol wearing a radiate crown and the horned bust of moon surmounted by a crescent, border to the perimeter representing two snakes; the inner border with seven six-pointed stars, a large dolphin-like creature swimming to the right, to the left a group of round objects; to the right of the left hand rider, a three-legged offering table with three candle-sticks; between the sun and the moon a standing female deity dressed in peplos and chiton, facing right with her right arm raised in front of her; behind the moon a bird waddling to left; to the right of the left hand rider, a cockerel; beneath the horse’s hooves two prostrate figures lying face down, head to the right and left, the right figure with the left knee bent in supplication; at the centre, between the two horsemen, a standing female deity in long chiton (Helen of Troy); behind the right horse, a standing male figure facing left with his right hand raised in salutation, wearing a knee length tunica, short boots and a heavy cloak; on the lower margin a small prostrate figure with head to the right, limbs extended, a twin-handled wine cup, a standard surmounted by a lamp, a figure hanging head down from a stunted tree and a lion stalking left. See Tudor, D., Corpus Monumentorum Religionis Equitum Danuviorum, 2 vols, Leiden, 1969-1976; Rinaldi Tufi, S., 'I cavalieri danubiani e i loro misteri', in I Daci, Catalogue of the exhibition, Milan, 1997, pp.90-91.61 grams, 70 mm (2 3/4 in.). From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s. The plaque contains a complex iconography of divine figures and symbols, probably associated with Thracian or Dacian beliefs of the Lower Danube region, but also with the Greek myth of the divine twins Castor and Pollux (the Dioscuri), an important element of Roman religion since its origins, here mixed with the cult of the Danubian rider. Presiding over the whole scene is usually the Sol Invictus (the unconquered sun-god) and his sister the Moon (Selene). The ear-ringed figure with long curly hair, wide hood and cape, appears to be a foreigner. Small jade figures of this type representing foreigners were first made during the Tang dynasty when figures of foreigners were produced in various materials, representing the cosmopolitan society of the period. Two such standing figures from the collection of Dr and Mrs Cheng Te-k'un, both dated to the Tang dynasty, are illustrated by J.Rawson and J.Ayers in Chinese jade throughout the ages, Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1975, nos.216 and 219. Each figure is similarly identified as a foreigner by his apparel, which includes a cloak.Compare with a related pale green jade carving of a foreigner, small Buddhist lion and kneeling figure, 17th century, which was sold at Bonhams New York, 21 March 2022, lot 231.
