A late 19th/early 20th century painted bisque porcelain rectangular plaque depicting Classical scene in relief, unsigned, 19.2 x 45.5cm, framed (af).Additional InformationThe head of a cherub on the lower-left has been knocked off, it is present but may need professional restoration; a 2cm hairline to right of central figure's flowing cloak, the female figure lay on the ground to the lower left has lost the little finger of her left hand, the right arm of the figure wearing the leopard skin cloak holding staff looks to be a later replacement possibly, as it is a slightly different colour and not modelled as well as the others, some further scuffs, marks, rubbing to painted detail, the central cherub has a chip to his upper right thigh, further surface dirt, please refer to illustrations and request additional if necessary.

Some touching up of gilding to the raised parts with small areas of restoration to the edges of the cloak, a few small losses to the leaves around the base.

A pair of Regency cut glass and gilt and patinated bronze lustre candlesticks, circa 1815, each with an engine milled urn socket above a scrolled corona hung with faceted beads and pendants, descending to a multi knopped stem and oval base, 21cm high; and an Empire twin light figural candelabrum, early 19th century, the scrolled and foliate cast arms issuing from a central flambeau finial supported by a cloaked caryatid, on a stepped rectangular section dove grey and white marble base, 24.5cm high, 27cm wide Provenance: The collection of the late Professor Michael Jaffé, Clifton Maybank The unusual cloaked caryatid, with her chastely crossed arms, could possibly represent a Vestal Virgin. In Ancient Rome these priestesses were tasked with cultivating and guarding the sacred fire of Vesta, goddess of the hearth. This association with fire made the maidens a common theme for candles, mantel clocks and fireplace ornament in later times. Alternatively, the heavy cloak and bracing gesture might signify winter.
A pair of early Derby Patch Mark figures, the Ranelagh Dancers, the gallant attired in a tricorn hat, doublet, hose and cloak, he holds a love letter while standing by a Rococo pedestal, his doublet painted in the style of the Cotton-stem Painter, his lady holding a nosegay wears a gown and cloak, with flowers and plumes in her hair, a ribbon-tied medallion suspended from her shoulder, each modelled with colourful bocage on a scrolling circular base and picked out in pastel tones of polychrome enamels throughout, 24cm high, c. 1765For a similar pair see: Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848, 1990, E17, page 98 and illustrated as fig. 75 on page 97. Provenance: the Wilders Collection, labelled. Condition Report: She with chipped plumage, well-restored right hand at wrist and crazed. He with restored tricorn edge thus with lost feathers, his left hand similarly well-restored at the rest as the latter, slight nibbled chip to cloak edge. Each with expected nibbles to bocage, stable firing cracks but lost in the overall display, some light surface wear. The figures possibly matched but work well together.

A collection of embroidered fabrics, 19th-20th century, seven pieces of embroidery, including: a panel of yellow moiré silk hand-embroidered with French Empire design of swags and tassels, with bees and garlands of flowers, within a foliate border, worked in appliqués of ivory drawn threadwork ribbon and matching silk thread, incorporating spangles and seed beads, selvedge to right-hand side, 44 x 55 cm (17.5 x 21.75 ins); a piece of cream satin with machine-embroidered overall floral pattern, three sides with earlier border of hand-embroidery similar (approximately 11-18 cm/4.5-7 ins wide), incorporating a strapwork design of metalled threads, some manuscript ink markings to one edge, lined with linen, overall size 96 x 114 cm (37.75 x 45 ins); and a large linen wall hanging, hand-embroidered with floral posies and baskets, with border of pyramids and floral sprays, hanging loops along top edge, some marks and stains, one area wearing slightly thin, with a 3 cm tear (not affecting embroidery), 246 x 241 cm (97 x 95 ins), plus part of a theatrical cloak with damask pattern in gold and colours (Qty: 8)
* Chinese Robe. A Chinese silk robe from the family of Sir Thomas Francis Wade, mid-late 19th century, a fine and heavy robe of peacock blue silk, elaborately embroidered overall with butterflies in a variety of colours, with border of butterflies and braid to neck, sleeve edges, and gusseted sides, quilted cream silk lining (with some minor discolouration in a few places), a few loose stitches and minor marks, but generally in very good condition, length 133cm (52.5ins), together with an old manuscript note 'Mandarin's Coat to MSH from T. Wade. Uncle Tom. Sir Thomas Wade First English Minister to China. Used as Opera Cloak by MSH also MFH' (Qty: 1)NOTESProvenance: Given by Sir Thomas Wade (1818-1895) to his sister-in-law Maria Sophia Hardcastle, née Herschel (1839-1929), and thence by descent. A quite magnificent robe with an interesting ownership history. Sir Thomas Wade was an eminent British diplomat and sinologist who spent over forty years in China. He taught himself Mandarin, wrote extensively on Chinese studies, and his pioneering work led to the famous Wade-Giles system of romanization for Mandarin Chinese. Thomas Wade was the first professor of Chinese at Cambridge University. In 1868 he married Amelia Herschel, the daughter of astronomer Sir John Herschel, and sister of Maria Sophia.

A dark patinated bronze classical figure holding a severed head, the cast bronze figure, probably dating to late 19th / early 20th century, probably Perseus with the head of Medusa, raised on oval plinth, unsigned, 8½in. A set of Derby figures of the Four Seasons c.1765-70, modelled as children in animated poses with varying attributes, Spring garlanded in flowers, Summer holding a large sheaf of corn, Autumn with a large basket of grapes strapped to his back, and Winter carrying a basket containing a goose and fastening a fur-lined cloak about her shoulders, raised on low scrolled bases, some good restoration, 21cm max. A rare pair of Derby figures of theatrical dancers c.1765, he standing with one hand on his hip, the other outstretched and holding the end of his cloak, wearing a plumed hat, his companion holding her skirts wide and with her right arm raised above her head, each raised on a tall scrolled base, some restoration and small losses, 19.4cm. An Unmounted Painted Fan Leaf, showing a couple dancing under the shade of trees, near water, a short distance from a stone building with tower and balustrade, possibly as part of a wedding or other celebration. The couple are accompanied by seated guitar player, wearing a flat black hat and red cloak, another man wearing a black bicorn hat, and two ladies and a girl, the ladies both wearing white veils. An inscription in the plain gorge area states ''Dancing the Bolero near to Barcelona.'' The verso is plain. Side measurement of leaf approx. 6.5 inches or 17cm, centrally approx. 6.1/8 inches or 15cm The Bolero is a slow Spanish dance with intricate steps. Good, strong colours and fine detail. Slightly crumpled at the bottom left corner. Paint flaking slightly, top right next to the buildings and less so at the top left near the autumnal leaves on the tree.

Piver ''Mismélis'': A Rare Printed Paper Advertising Fan, in fontange form, the wood sticks dyed dark green, the leaf quite striking in dark green and black, featuring a lady in striped skirt and blue/floral cloak and a man with silk cravate and green cloak, a dove to the left. The verso, in cream printed with green flowers, advertises ''Parfumerie L.T. PIVER PARIS''. Artist, Umberto Brunelleschi (1879 - 1949). The scent ''Mismélis'' was launched in 1921. Guard length 6 inches or 15cm Overall height 9.5 inches or 24cm PVR8. Glue repair to upper guard. Some rubbing to the folds. Slight crumpling to the centre top. Stain to the lower left of the verso.
