St Jerome, who is the patron saint of Librarians, is shown as an anchorite in his cell, with his only possessions being the bible, a cross and a skull. The rich red cloak denotes his rank of cardinal within the Catholic church. The lion lying at his feet illustrates the medieval story in which he removed a thorn fron a lion’s paw. (1)
