Spanish school, second half of the 17th century"St. Martin of Tours and the Beggar".Oil on canvas, relined.Reinforced on the edges.Frame of the XIX century.Measurements: 33 x 24 cm. 39,5 x 32 cm. (frame). The theme of St. Martin and the Beggar has been treated by great artists, such as Anton van Dyck or El Greco, especially from the Baroque period. In this painting, the saint clearly shows us the gesture of cutting with his sword a piece of his cloak to give it to the poor. The armored clothing of the rider of the beautiful white cord contrasts with the rags of the beggar. The red cloth, being the protagonist of the painting, exerts a studied chromatic attraction in the middle of a landscape dominated by ochre and white tones. The burnished metals have been worked with careful glazes.
Rare oil on canvas dated towards the end of the Viceroyalty of Peru and in the middle of the first government of Agustín Gamarra (1829 - 1833). Interesting composition where we see Jesus, with a black robe and an angel behind looking at the viewer under a red cloak. Measurements: 116 x 85 cm

(1291941) (1) (18)Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640) and workshop, attributedMINERVA PROTECTING PEACE FROM MARS Oil on canvas.165 x 185 cm.The present painting is a detail section from a comparable work by Peter Paul Rubens, which is held in London. It shows Minerva, the goddess of defensive war, wisdom and trade, in armour and helmet, during the expulsion of Mars, the god of war, who is shown here in armour with a red cloak.Notes:“Minerva protecting Peace from Mars”, or “Peace and War”, is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. He created it in London between 1629 and 1630, during a diplomatic mission from the Spanish Netherlands to Charles I of England. It is now in the National Gallery in London.

An early 19th century painted, carved treen, advertising figure, probably for tobacco, of a man standing with his left foot forward and right arm raised in the air, wearing a gold waistcoat and long black cloak, with a contemporaneous iron staple in the back, s/d, probably lacking its pipe, 61cm highFootnote: These smaller advertising figures would have stood on the shop counter, or in the shop window. Given the staple this may well have been above the fascia. Larger ones, sometimes life size would have been placed on the pavement, outside the shop. The oldest examples are black boys, or blackamoors. In the 17th century they were modelled on men from Guinea, but later depicted European type figures, such as this example.Pinto, Edward, H. Treen. London: 1968. Chapter 26, page 412.Condition report: Lacking pipe in right hand. Paint chips and dents all over.Hairline cracks and some losses, including around the join between the right arm and torso and across the head. Overall condition ok and consistent with age and use.

Clemens Pasch (1910 - 1985)Girl in a cloak, bronze with greenish brown patina on a stone base, height with base ca. 74 cm, signedLiterature: Wvz. Gertz/Günther 73The Düsseldorf sculptor Clemens Pasch mainly created elongated figures of statuesque posture, often standing in casual poses. In later works, curves of the body such as thighs and hips of the female body are strongly emphasized. A number of his works can be found as large sculptures in public spaces. The artist is not concerned with the depiction of individual figures and models, but with the body as a sculptural form in its relationship to its spatial environment. The sitting ''Girl in a Coat'' sets a counterpoint to this, so to speak. Her body is completely enveloped by a hooded cloak, which in its aesthetic quality marks the boundary between the function of the image and the pure, rounded materiality of the raw bronze, while the hands resting in the lap and the face are naturalistically formed. The materiality, the traces left by tools, the roughness of the surface as well as the raw natural stone base are placed in a tense relationship to the gracefully rendered uncloaked parts girl's body.

English SchoolPortrait of Tsar Peter the Great as the Grand Czar of Muscovy, c. 1698 oil on canvas laid down22.5 x 19.8cm (8 7/8 x 7 13/16in).Footnotes:ProvenancePossibly Christie's, London, 17 July 1807, lot 28 (sold by Mallough to Seguier for three pounds) – 'Czar Peter by Rembrandt'.This rare image is connected to Tsar Peter's stay in London during his Grand Embassy of 1698. Furthermore, it relates directly to several engravings of the Tsar made during Peter's visit by the likes of Robert White, William Faithorne and Jacob Gole.Although only Godfrey Kneller's portrait in the Royal Collection is the only official image made of the Tsar during his visit to London, it seems that the appearance of the Russian ruler was captured in another unofficial image. Unlike Kneller's highly westernised depiction, this rare depiction shows the Tsar in the traditional guise of a Muscovite Tsar bedecked in opulent furs, diamonds and a gold threaded cloak. The exotic appearance of the Tsar in traditional Russian dress caught the imagination of Londoners and resulted in the demand for popular images such as this one. Both scholars Anthony Cross (2000) and Dmitrii Rovinskii (1888) were unaware of a surviving painting connected to the aforementioned engravings. Notably, Faithorne's version showing the Tsar in his robes and fur hat bears the inscription that it was 'Drawing by the life Since his Imperial Majesty Came into England'. Rovinskii had connected the engravings to a reworking of Kneller's portrait, however, the reappearance of this painted portrait adds further complexity to this suggestion.Pigment analysis favours a dating to c. 1698 and has identified no later synthetic materials dating from post 1715. Furthermore, the blue pigment in the Tsar's jacket is comprised of the costly natural ultramarine (lapis lazuli). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
