Gerard Dillon (1916-1971) SHAWL oil on board signed lower right; titled on label on reverse 9½ x 14in. (24.13 x 35.56cm) This painting, depicting a woman sheltering two children under a traditional shawl, is set in a landscape that has the distinctive stone walls and white cottages of Connemara. Dillon first visited the west in 1939 and continued to spend periods painting in Connemara throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s. The figure of the woman sheltering her children has echoes of Beatrice Elvery's famous image Éire (1907). That painting depicts a female figure, half Madonna, half Celtic goddess, sheltering the people of Ireland in the folds of her green cloak. Bought by Maud Gonne for St. Enda's, the school that Padraig Pearse founded in Ranelagh, Éire combines nationalism and religion to create an iconic image that helped to inspire the struggle for Irish independence. Dillon was brought up in a Catholic and nationalist family in the Falls Road area of west Belfast and although he was to lose his faith and spent most of his life in London, he remained a committed nationalist and famously withdrew his work from the Irish Exhibition of Living Art when it toured to Belfast in 1969 in protest at Civil Rights abuses in the North. Although Shawl is not an explicitly nationalist painting, both Dillon's love of Connemara, the area of Ireland least influenced by British rule, and his use of Catholic and Celtic imagery within his work, enables a reading of this painting as part of his celebration of what he considered to be the 'real' Ireland. 1st-2nd century AD. A marble figure showing the torso and upper thighs of a male with military cloak at the shoulders and back, a short tunic gathered at the waist and wide belt; mounted on custom-made stand. 920 grams, 21cm including stand (8 1/4"). Fine condition. Acquired on the UK art market prior to 1985. Rose, C. Dynastic Commemoration and Imperial Portraiture in the Julio-Claudian Period, Cambridge, 1997 The draping of the cloak and the style of cuirass would suggest that this is a victorious general or emperor. It was important for the emperor to be portrayed as the conquering hero as this placed him in a similar role to that of Alexander the Great, after whom many emperors modelled themselves, but also as the protector of the Empire and the people within it. It was not just the emperor who could be portrayed in this way, but also high ranking aristocrats and senators were also depicted as victorious generals, but this use of imagery by private individuals eventually fell out of use as the Imperial family took precedence in the political sphere in the early days of the Empire. As well as the emperor other members of the Imperial family could be portrayed in this way as a means of propaganda to bolster the claim of certain individuals as heirs to the Imperial throne, such as Germanicus, great-nephew of Augustus, who was destined to rule until his untimely death.

Fine condition. Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. See Nicolae, C. The Iconography of the Antique Hero in the Balkan Area, in Marisia vol.XXXI, 2011, for discussion of the iconography. Examples are the Greek Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, the Romano-Celtic Jupiter Taranis and the Danubian rider-gods. The main god of Thrace was a rider-god who was extremely popular in the Roman period and who appears to have had no name but was referred to only as the hero.
