It may also have been cleaned and restored in the 19th century. There is evidence that the work has been torn in the embroidered material in the background colour. This area has been filled and restored and the restoration is now starting to deteriorate. There may also have been a further damage on the hands of the sitter - these areas have also been restored with further areas of restoration in the flesh tones on the face and in his wig. The ermine robes appear to be fairly intact although restoration may have been done to the lacework on the sleeve around the left hand. Within the process of the vacuum lining the picture has been flattened, although impasto is clearly evident it is rather squashed down. There is extensive crackelure throughout and some dirt and discoloured varnish to the surface. In an outer plain wooden black frame with inner gilt slip. 060313
