British School (18th Century)Portrait of John Goodricke Bart (by repute, presumed to be 5th Baronet), head and shoulders, wearing a short powdered wig, standing before an architectural pillar and a classical roundel relief Oil on canvas, 72.5cm by 62cmThe painting is lined, all keys present, slightly slack tension. There is a quantity of debris behind the bottom stretcher. Original tacking margins removed, as can be seen at the face where they are exposed inside the frame sight. There are old associated retouched losses, and overpaint extends the natural edge of the paint in places. There a finescale and a largescale network of brittle age and impact craquelure throughout, with large passages of lifting and active flaking, particularly to the right through the arm and cloak and to the left side of the head and ajacent background. These area have had a history of flaking and loss, and older losses are filled and retouched. Newer losses are unretouched. The retouching is matte in places. In the rest of the painting, the cracks are lifting slightly and there are scattered further smaller losses, some retouched. There are thick old varnish layers, yellowed and fairly opaque so difficult to see if there is further overpaint in the background. There are patches of a thick gritty material to the left lapel, to the left lower edge, and in the top right corner. Scattered scuffs and surface abrasions, and a patchy, uneven surface gloss. There is a thick layer of surface dirt and dark scattered accretions.

Lot 1140

Italian School (17th Century) Santa Dorothea Inscribed verso, "Re Lined by H W Holder, Portland Place, Hull", oil on canvas, 98cm by 92.5cmExhibited: National Exhibition, Leeds, 1868, according to label reverse Provenance: Private Collection, East Riding of Yorkshire  The painting has an old lining, which is painted red at the reverse with black drips/staining. On an old stretcher with keys missing, and the stretcher bar inscribed 'Sir Godfery Kneller 1760'. Fair tension, but loss of impasto associated with the lining. The canvas is distorted and slightly lumpy in the top corners (see images). There is a fine brittle age craquelure throughout, slightly elevated and cupped in places but mostly secure at present. It is difficult to see quite what is going on in the darker passages of the painting due to the opaque old varnish and cracking. However, there is likely several old campaigns of restoration across the painting with some reddish retouching and thick opaque brown restoration visible in strong torchlight. There are scattered old filled losses at the corners, centre top edge, in the top of the palm where the fillings are slightly lumpy and lifting. There has been some history of flaking, now overpainted, leaving the surface with an uneven appearance. Notably this can be seen in the dark cloak over the Saint's shoulder (see images in raking and reflected light). There are small scattered newer losses including in the top left quadrant. There are larger filled and retouched damages including an L-shaped filling and retouching possibly to an old tear through the white drapery of the Saint's left sleeve. There is a long line of old losses and associated restoration running ten centimeters in from the right edge, extending through the hair and shoulder of the boy to the bottom edge with discoloured overpaint. Not all the losses have been filled. Further larger losses/patches of overpaint include those to the upper lip of the boy, the hand of the Saint holding the palm. There have been successive campaigns of restoration, some partially removed, for example the opaque green leaves that extend over the lower hand of the Saint.Much of the paint surface of the flesh tones and red drapery has a pockmarked/pitted appearance with paint from paint flaking. This is usually associated with heat or chemical burning. Some of the larger losses have been overpainted (see images). There are futher passages of overpaint throughout, including to the hair, the black necklace, and the hand. There is a thick old yellowed varnish, partially removed in the face. Old ingrained dirt. Splashes and wipe marks across the surface and white powdery residue, thick surface dirt.Examined in frame.

UNITED KINGDOM. Elizabeth II, 1952-2022. Gold 1/4 sovereign, 2017. Royal Mint. Proof. Commemorating the 200 year anniversary of the modern sovereign 1817-2017, featuring the original design of St. George and the Dragon as made by Pistrucci.Fifth crowned head of Elizabeth II facing right; JC below; ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REG · FID · DEF · 2017 ·. Design by Jody Clark. / The reverse depicts an illustration of the legend of St George as the slayer of the dragon, in its original 1817 interpretation. St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a broken lance. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse's bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint's horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George's spear and in the throes of death. The point of the lance is broken off in the dragon's side. In relief in the left part of the ground line, the artist's initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci). See Mango, Mango, Evans & Hughes, A 6th century Mediterranean bucket from Bromeswell Parish, Suffolk, in Antiquity 63, 1989, pp.295-311; Carver, M., Sutton Hoo. A Seventh Century Princely Burial Ground and its Context, London, 2005, p.485-7; Drandaki, A., ??????? ??? KYPI(E) A Late Roman brass bucket with a hunting scene published on Academia.edu. 523 grams, 22 cm wide (8 5/8 in.). Found East Anglia, believed Cambridgeshire, UK.From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.Accompanied by a copy of Drandaki, A., ??????? ??? KYPI(E) A Late Roman brass bucket with a hunting scene. The vessel is of an unusual type: three have been found in Turkey, Italy and Spain, three in England (excluding the present examples) and three others have unknown findspots; this find brings the total of known examples to ten. The rarity of these vessels indicates the high status of their owners. Each of these buckets is decorated with a hunting frieze and most have an inscription in early medieval Greek. Their manufacture is so similar that it is thought that they were produced at a single workshop in the Eastern Empire, possibly at Antioch, in the 6th century AD (Drandaki, n.d.). Their exact use is not certain, but since several of the inscriptions refer to 'good health' this suggests a domestic setting related to bathing. The rounded object held by figure (6) is clearly based on a similar rounded clump which appears on the vessel in Benaki Museum (beneath the word ' KA?OI') where it is more convincingly executed with a hatched fill (Drandaki, p.39). Only three examples of this type of vessel are previously known from England: one from Bromeswell, Suffolk, within 1 km of the Sutton Hoo cemetery, found in preparatory work for the Sutton Hoo Visitor Centre; one from Chessell Down, Isle of Wight, where the bucket was part of a rich female grave excavated in the 19th century; one from Breamore, Hampshire, found by metal-detectorist, and excavated by Hampshire County Council's archaeology team who discovered that the grave in which it was found formed part of an important early Anglo-Saxon cemetery. The excavation was filmed by Channel 4's Time Team in August 2001; the cemetery held six more burials with bronze containers, though none as grand as this Byzantine example. [No Reserve]

Lot 435

18th century A.D.. See Chojnacki, S., Major Themes in Ethiopian Painting, indigenous developments, the influence of foreign models and their adaptation, from the 13th to the 19th century, Wiesbaden, 1983, figs.90, 91, for similar Crucifixion and Resurrection scenes. 946 grams total, 32.5 x 21.5 - 33 x 21.5 cm (12 3/4 x 8 1/2 - 13 x 8 1/2 in.). Ex Alistair McAlpine collection, 2004.Ex central London gallery. The icon shows Western influence on Ethiopian art. The Crucifixion image contains many elements of this iconography which are found in many Oriental and Western art of the Middle Ages, but with significant changes from the previous representations: Jesus is nailed with three nails and not four, the head leaning towards his right shoulder and the hair falling on his shoulders. Following the Western influence, Christ is represented in a spasm of physical pain, and consequently a more detailed anatomy of his chest and abdomen is depicted. This concept of the Crucifixion, common in the Italian Late Middle Age and Renaissance art, found its way to Ethiopia at some time towards the end of the 15th century, or at the beginning of the 16th century. As in the majority of the Resurrection icons of this period, Christ is dressed in a long robe with a cloak or toga draped over one shoulder. [No Reserve]

Measurements: 29x22x21 cms. Weight 3.2 kg, in fine silver. Writing desk with a silver tray in its color and gilded finish that has four containers with lids and a pedestal in the center topped by a seated sculpture. The tray, rectangular in shape with the four sides slightly curved outwards, shows an edge decorated with plant elements and, on the larger fronts, a cresting at the top followed by another in the lower area creating a symmetrical composition with scrolls, a figurehead on the front and plant motifs, and four monster-shaped legs (leaf foot, elongated body with breasts, long neck, head of a lion or similar and feathered wings). Each of the containers has a circular base on which the monstrous female figures that decorate them rest on their plant “leg” (winged, holding plant motifs in front of their breasts), a bulbous shape and a raised lid towards the center decorated with a band of simple architectural motifs, which is, in turn, topped by a bird hunting a snake. In the center, on a circular and stepped pedestal, there is a tubular pedestal decorated with garlands, vegetal scrolls, venerated shapes and monstrous masks. Sitting on a seat, a human figure is presented dressed in a tunic and cloak, barefoot and carrying some objects, with short uncovered hair. Note that the monsters (sometimes called fantastic bugs) that the piece presents as legs are very similar to those on the writing desk dated around 1847 that has marks from the Royal Silver Factory of Antonio Martínez and that is preserved in the Museum del Prado (Madrid). The masks mentioned on the pedestal are very similar to those presented by “The Allegory of Justice” which was a gift from Medina de Pomar to the Minister of Grace and Justice in 1849 (Museum of Romanticism, Madrid) and which also shows punches by Martínez. This work is clearly inspired by the office of the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Royal Palace of Madrid (National Heritage, ref. B. 428-9045) made in 1851 by the Real Fábrica de Platería Martínez. Note that the four “putti” or child figures that would surround the central figure do not appear here, that it has a slightly different posture, and that the crests of the tray are different, among other details. Weight: 3174 grams.

Follower of Bento Coelho da Silveira,  Portuguese 1617-1708- Madonna and Child enthroned with saints; oil on panel, 44 x 35 cm. Provenance:  Property from a European Private Collection. Note:  The present work recalls the works of Bento Coelho da Silveira, who was himself heavily influenced by Marcos da Cruz (c.1610-1683), and who served as Royal Painter to Pedro II of Portugal (1648-1706). The scene depicts a number of saints defined by their attributes below the seated Madonna and the Christ Child, who is shown holding a stalk of lilies. Visible among the saints are Saint Sebastian impaled by arrows and Saint George who slays a dragon, both to the lower right of the composition, and Saint Martin, who offers half of his cloak to a beggar, to the lower left.

After Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn,  Dutch 1606-1669- Portrait of a bearded man in a cap; oil on canvas, feigned oval, 62 x 45.5 cm. Provenance:  Property from a European Private Collection. Note:  The present work appears to be a copy after Rembrandt's 1642 painting of a bearded man wearing a cloak and a hat, described as a rabbi, which was recorded as being in the private collection of the financier Jules Porgès (1839-1921). The original was illustrated on page 393 of Adolf Rosenberg and Wilhelm Reinhold Valentiner's 1908 catalogue raisonné of Rembrandt's work, and was again referenced in Abraham Bredius's 1935 catalogue raisonné of the artist (no.220).
