Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "American Woodcock and Mayflower" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Birds and Flowers of Canada - Nova Scotia, postmarked June 30, 1978. AMERICAN WOODCOCK Philohela minor The Woodcock's day is spent dozing in a well-concealed ground nest, but as the cloak of night falls over the woodland, he springs awake to hunt. In a single night the Woodcock may consume half his weight in earthworms. When full, he takes to the air for a daring performance designed to dazzle the female. If the moon is full, the Woodcock may stage an all-night show. Once the courting ritual is over, however, the male Woodcock has little to do with family life. The female lays three to four eggs with brown spots in a nest of leaves and twigs -- and she continues to watch over her fluffy chicks until they can fly. When the young are grown and summer is at an end, the Woodcocks head south to their winter home. MAYFLOWER Epigaea repens It seems likely that the Mayflower derives its name from the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America. After a hard winter, the Pilgrims, no doubt, came upon this delicate bloomer and named it after their ship. The Mayflower, or Trailing Arbutus, is a delightful woodland native of Canada and the northern United States. It bears trailing hairy stems, green leaves, and clusters of white or pink flowers of sweet fragrance. The plant spreads in thick mats and prefers a home beneath a pine tree. Here, fallen pine needles and leaves protect its evergreen foliage throughout the Canadian winter. One of the welcome heralds of spring, the Mayflower blossoms often appear while there is still snow on the ground. Image Size: 13.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 14 x 17 in. Unframed. (B05207)

Lot 85

Sehr guter Zustand. Provenienz: Christie‘s, 27.06.1975 (dort mit s/w Abb.)Fototeca Zeri Inv. Nr. 19300.A.R. (1350024) (3) (11)Master of Tuscany School, 13th/ 14th centuryIn the stylistic circle of painters Pietro Lorenzetti (ca. 1280 - ca. 1348) and Bernardo Daddi (1290 - 1348).THE DEPOSITION FROM THE CROSS Tempera and gilding on poplar wood, ca. 1.5cm extensions on three sides. 31.5 x 21.5 cm.Frame with velvet lining. The small panel painting depicts the scene in a highly stylized manner. The figures, which almost completely cover the cross are depicted against a nightly black background. The body of Christ is depicted raised between the assistant figures in the lower part of the painting, held by Joseph of Arimathea, who shown in long robes standing on a rung of a and holding the body of Christ with both arms. The pedestal on the cross on which Christ’s feet are resting is clearly depicted. The shaft of the cross itself rises from a split rock, which is a remarkable iconographic detail referring to the period when the painting was created. The groups of assistant figures on the left show the Three Marys, with Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene to her left clearly shown in the foreground, while the other women behind them only appear by means of their gilt haloes. The Virgin Mary, draped in a dark cloak, kisses the hand of Christ, whose slender overlong arm is stretched out. On the other hand, Mary Magdalene is emphasized by the red of her cloak. The right group depicts Nicodemus kneeling, using pliers to pull out the cross nail of Christ’s feet. Clearly, Christ is depicted in three-nail type. This type is widespread from ca. 1260, which also facilitates the dating of the painting. The other two nails of the hands are shown in the lower part of the painting. Christ’s favourite disciple John is shown weeping, his head resting on his hand and draped in a pink cloak. The style of the painting suggests Tuscany. Cimabue was among the first artists to abandon Byzantine formalism in painting. As a teacher of Giotto di Bondone (1276 - 1337) he had significant influence on 14th century painting. As is clear in the present painting rendering the faces in lifelike physiognomy is intentional, for example in the depiction of mourning or weeping faces and this was continuously developed from then on. Among the painters whose works are similar to the present painting are Bernardo Daddi (1290 Florence - 1348) and Pietro Lorenzetti (ca. 1280 Siena - ca. 1348). The Lindenau Museum in Altenburg holds an important collection of early Italian paintings. Panel slightly warped. The depiction shown in a flat triangle at the top and closed on the sides by dark bands. The gilt haloes are hallmarked with a cross in Christ’s nimbus. Very good condition.Provenance: Christie’s, 27 June 1975 (with black and white illustration) Fototeca Zeri, inventory no. 19300.

Lot 509

Ausstellungen:2017, Hoffnungs(t)raum Phantastisch. Eine Reise durch die phantastische Kunst, Kunsthalle Leoben.2017-2022, Blauer Salon des Ernst-Fuchs-Museums, Wien. (1352161) (13)Ernst Fuchs,1930 Vienna - 2015 Ibid. The artist is considered a co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE; MOSES FOUNTAINHeight: 185 cm.Foundry: Kunstgießerei Strassacker, Vienna. Ltd. edition no. 6/6.Bronze; cast with mid-brown patina. At the beginning of the 1970s, Ernst Fuchs acquired a villa destined for demolition in the Penzing district of Vienna and subsequently restored and adapted it to his own artistic style with small, cautious changes. As a child he is said to have promised his mother that he would purchase the building one day. He lives here with his family, exhibits his objects, and the house and garden became an artist’s house of European rank. The fountain complex is the central point of the architectural ensemble and was developed between 1986 and 2000 and represents a sanctuary for nymphs above a spring, which is reminiscent of ancient models with its columnar architecture and shows cascades surrounded by open staircases. The Moses sculpture was designed between 1965 and 1970 and includes a re-enactment of Michelangelo’s Moses sculpture in Rome, so it is a throwback to the Renaissance. The horns, which also adorn the present bronze sculpture, are a symbol of the ability for prophetic vision that God bestowed on Moses after his return from Mount Sinai. Moses struck his staff against a rock where a spring gave water from then on, when his people threatened to die of thirst in the desert. God also divided the Red Sea for Moses so that the people of Israel could flee, hence Moses can also be interpreted as a protector from the untamed power of water. Like the cloak of the Virgin of Mercy, Moses’ cloak encloses the people who are placed in its folds.Provenance:Atelier Ernst Fuchs.Acquired there from the previous owner. Notes 1:The object offered for sale here was cast in the traditional Strassacker art foundry in Vienna that Ernst Fuchs readily entrusted with the bronze casting of his sculptural designs.Notes 2:Four more copies can be found at their original location, the Nymphaeum Omega in the Otto-Wagner-Villa (Ernst-Fuchs-Museum Vienna-Penzing); on the cathedral square in Wiener Neustadt, in the city park of Bärnbach in Styria and in a private collection.Exhibitions:2017, Hoffnungs(t)raum Phantastisch.
