When John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan he said 'Behold, the Lamb of God' (John 1: 36), this ring shows the figure of the saint, with typically long beard, wearing his camel hair robe and pointing to the lamb (Agnus Dei).Condition Report: The ring is lacking any trace of enamel, but the detail is good, the carving of ST John the Baptist is clear and quite crisp, there is some very slight rubbing/smoothing to the side of the ring from use, there is some slightly greasy looking dirt to some areas of the shank and in some if the incised sections. A FINE ROMAN TWO LAYERED CAMEO SET IN A GEORGIAN RING. VOTIVE SCENE. 1st century A.D.Stone 16x21 mm; int. Size 16,5x22 mm; 4,57 gr.A male character is standing, three-quarters facing right. The male figure is characterized by physiognomic features that can probably be referred to the Augustan age. The horse is inspired by classical Greek models. The man seems to arrive in a bucolic place to contemplate or visit the incinerated remains of a family member or a comrade in arms.Very fine style and beautiful execution. Wear marks. Little missing on the edge and frame. For a very similar scene and style, see: L.P.Biroli Stefanelli, La Collezione Paoletti, vol. Follower of Hans Holbein Portrait of King Henry VIII (1491-1547) bust-length, in a fur-lined cloak and gold-brocade doublet, with a chain and feathered black hatinscribed 'Henricus Octavvs' (above the sitter)oil on panel33 x 26.5cmProvenance:Bonhams, London, 13th April 1999, lot 2, when acquired by the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)This bust-length portrait derives from the lost full-length image of the King by Holbein, which was part of a mural for Whitehall Palace executed in 1536-7. Based on the iconic images of Henry VIII which Holbein and his studio produced throughout the sitter’s lifetime, these depictions of Henry VIII became the sanctioned images of the court and were reproduced widely. They were intended to propagate the strength of the Tudor dynasty and the total authority of Henry VIII as King. Significantly, these images achieved this without the traditional symbolism of royal power such as a crown or sceptre, but instead through Henry VIII’s posture, facial expression and symbols of wealth, such as his costume and jewellery. The painting is executed in oil on a wooden panel support formed from a single oak board. The panel is in a good condition and is uniformly in plane. The thinly applied paint layers have developed a network of age cracks following the vertical woodgrain of the panel. These are slightly raised and vulnerable in some areas. There is extensive overpaint in the face covering wear and abrasion. There are also brushy areas of overpaint in the red background. The varnish has yellowed with age and no longer adequately saturates the paint layers below. There are scuffs and scratches across the surface.Stencil Christie's - PH456 Framed 50.5 x 44cm

Lot 294

Circle of Francis Hayman (1708-1776) Portrait of a lady in a white silk dress with blue bow and blue cloak, a string of pearls in her hair, in a painted ovaloil on canvas, in a carved and giltwood frame74 x 62cmProvenance:Presumably by descent within the Jackson family to Elizabeth Jackson, who married Thomas Berney of Bracon,Thence by descent to the present ownerThe sitter by family tradition was Grace Jackson (née Goldstone, c.1750-1798), later Lady Duckett, daughter and heir of London merchant, Gwyn Goldstone of Goldstone, Shropshire, and his wife Grace Duckett. In 1775, she married George Jackson (1725-1822), politician, Deputy Secretary to the Admiralty and patron of Captain James Cook. In 1791, her husband was created a baronet. Upon the death of her uncle, Thomas Duckett, in 1797, her husband assumed the name Duckett to secure the inheritance of the family Hartham estate at Corsham, Wiltshire, becoming Sir George Duckett, 1st Bt. From the dress, however, and fashion of the sitter, the latter cannot be someone born circa 1750. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. There are localised areas of flaking and loss located at the edges of the picture, associated with framing and impact. The rest of the paint layers are in a good, stable condition. Overpaint is present, visible in ultraviolet light, mainly covering wear and abrasion in the background. The varnish is matte, dull and no longer adequately saturating the paint layers. There are matte spots and surface dirt present.

AFTER A MODEL BY GIOVANNI BOLOGNA (GIAMBOLOGNA, 1529-1608) A BRONZE FIGURE OF A PEASANT RESTING ON HIS STAFF PROBABLY LATE 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY ITALIAN The figure wearing a short tunic, boots with floppy tops and a broad rimmed hat, with a small water barrel, set on an alabaster mounted, brass strung and mounted walnut base figure 13cm high including peg to base, the whole 23cm high, base 7.5cm square Provenance: Ex Kenneth Clark Collection The earliest reference to this figure- one of a set of four- came in 1601 when a silver version was loaned to Giambologna's former assistant Antonio Susini for casting in bronze. The document described it as follows: "a little figure in silver of a peasant with his hat and a staff, leaning upon his staff" (Una figuretta d'arg(en)to di un villano co(n) Capello co(n) bastoncino che sappoggia il su il bastone) Cf Giambologna 1529-1608: Sculptor to the Medici., Avery, Charles & Radcliffe, Anthony, published by UK: The Art Council, 1978. The earliest casts tend to be distinguished by having an oval base the figure stands on- together with clearer definition and space in the execution of staff and cloak. This later cast is closer to examples such as the one found at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (NT 515066) but lacks the careful stippling and detailing.Condition Report: The whole presenting quite dirty- has been in a cupboard for some time. The patina showing paler/more golden areas from wear from handling and display. It has been suggested that some gilding may have been applied- then patination over it The stand dirty- associated- traces of former mounted object to top- one panel with crackWear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request.
