A FINE FRENCH 'WALKING ELEPHANT' AUTOMATON FIGUREATTRIBUTED TO ROULLET AND DECAMPS, PARIS, CIRCA 1895The animal modelled in papier mache composition covered with felt faux grey hide and with painted wooden tusks in standing pose with trunk raised, wearing an elaborate paste and faux pearl set red velvet tabard-type 'saddle' covering decorated in the Indian style with gilt brocade and tassels, riding on the back of the animal is a bisque-headed character doll modelled as a young girl wearing a gilt brocaded silk gown, jewelled belt, silk breaches and a turban, holding aloft a gilt line entwined staff issuing ribbons in her left hand, the spring-powered mechanism wound to the left hand side causing the elephant to stride forward on spur-ratchet rollers within the feet and the figure to presumably rock back and forth with the motion of the elephant whilst walking.35.5cm (14ins) high, 39cm (15.25ins) long, 13cm (5ins) wide. Jean Roullet was a leading Parisian maker of automata who set up business at 10 Parc Royal in 1865. His daughter, Henriette, married another talented maker of automata, Ernest Decamps who joined the firm to create Roullet and Decamps. The business continued under successive generations throughout the 20th century with the last of Henriette and Ernest's sons, Gaston, dying in 1972. Amongst Roullet and Decamps products were a series of walking animals of which the elephant is one of the best known. The mechanism incorporated into the present lot utilises ratchet-tooth wheels to each foot to allow the animal to 'grip' the surface as it moves forward. This system was patented by Roullet and Decamps hence a firm attribution can be placed. The bisque-headed figure and 'saddle' covering to the back of the animal is a very rare feature and is of the finest quality. Condition Report: The mechanism is currently fully wound but is not operational - something appears to be jammed. Unfortunately the nature of the construction of the automaton means that we cannot gain access to the mechanism to investigate the issue. Externally the automaton is in very good original condition; the 'rider' has papier mache body and is seated on a post connected to the mechanism beneath; the attachment to this post has become loose so the figure can be lifted off. The cloak of the seated figure has some noticeable fading to the shoulders/arms as well as some degradation to the silk; her pantaloons have degraded at the knees. The tabard over the elephant has some wear/fading and there is a small loss to the brocading. The elephant skin has some staining to the trunk and has evidence of being partially re-glued to the underside including a small area of overpainting. The legs are fine condition and complete with their ratcheted wheels to the feet. There is a winding key included. Please see/request additional images as these form part of this condition report. Condition Report Disclaimer

20th century A.D. The figure with stylised face, the head surmounted by a high crown worn around a cap, possibly depicting a bishop or a king; the body closed within a cloak fastened at the front, a profile portrait to base for use as a seal impression. Ex Everitt collection, acquired by descent 2017. The small statuette comes probably from the area of Axum, the cradle of Ethiopian Christian civilisation and the place where the tabot of Zion (Ark of the Covenant) is believed to be hidden, containing the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments God gave Moses. The statuette represents probably a king (possibly King Solomon, ancestor of the Ethiopian Royal Dynasty) or an Ethiopian priest dressed with the crown (Akil) and the Holy Liturgy cloak(qaba). Acquired 1970s-1996. Property of a North American collector. London collection, 2016. Cloaks and mantles were the main type of outer garments worn by men in late antiquity. They are mentioned in the sources under a variety of names: birrus, caracallus, cucullus, lacerna, sagum, paenula and paludamentum. Unfortunately, despite the fact that cloaks were such important garments they are preserved in far fewer numbers from burials in Egypt than tunics, except as fragments. [No Reserve]

Lot 460

Circa 12th century A.D. The woven textile fragment of linen and wool with a large horizontal decorative band depicting octagonal rosettes inscribed in rhomboids; the rosettes divided by stylised columns decorated with foliage elements; the band edged by two lateral segments formed of octagonal rosettes enclosing flowers, bordered with scalloped geometries; at the bottom four stylised dancers. Cf. Rutschowscaya, M.H., Tissus Coptes, Paris, 1990, p.73, for similar. 285 grams, 60 x 35.5 cm (23 5/8 x 14 in.). Acquired 1970s-1996. Property of a North American collector. Lot 769

1st century A.D. Comprising three lentoid-section glandes. Cf. Marchant, D.J., Roman weaponry in the province of Britain from the second century to the fifth century AD, Durham, 1991, fig.26, for similar. 167 grams total, 50-65 mm (2 - 2 1/2 in.). Ex Simmons Gallery, London E11, UK, in the 1990s. From a North London collection. The trio finds parallels with examples unearthed at Ham Hill, Somerset, UK. The sling (funda) with its lead missiles (plumbea pondera) was used by special funditores, illustrated on Trajan’s Column where they are simply dressed in broad tunics with no armour, but carry a shield. Their cloak, or sagulum acted as an ammunition bag. The effectiveness of the slingers was unquestionable and much appreciated, especially against elephants. Celsus, writing towards the end of the 2nd century A.D., described how a slingshot wound was more dangerous and harder to treat than one inflicted by an arrow. [3, No Reserve]

Lot 850

Circa 6th-7th century A.D. Shaped as an equal-armed cross, surface decorated with pellet-in-circles, catch and fastening pin on the back; polished. Cf. Wamser, H., Die Welt Von Byzanz-Europas Ostliches Erbe, Germany, 2004, p.276, no.426, for a very similar example. 5.27 grams, 28 mm (1 1/8 in.). Acquired on the UK art market. Property of a Ruislip, UK, gentleman, by inheritance. The cross fibulae was part of a Roman female costume in the Mediterranean and in the regions around the Mediterranean. They were used to close the cloak at chest height. [No Reserve]

Lot 105

5th century B.C. Comprising the bottom part of a cup-skyphos or pyxis, decorated with concentric circles in red and black, the internal part painted with the image of a young athlete, wrapped in a short chlamys and leaning upon his staff, the ground represented as a concave space. Cf. Boardman, J., Athenian Red Figure Vases. The Archaic period, London, 1975, fig.81. 95 grams, 12.5 cm (5 in.). Acquired in Europe before 1990.This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.11810-206516. The everyday life of ancient Greeks is well represented on the Attic red figure paintings. The short cloak (chlamys) is the favourite garment for the men and the hair of the younger men is more often shown cropped than in the black Attic figure paintings. The nakedness of youths exercising at the palaistra could well have been an important source of inspiration for the Greek artists who were becoming increasingly aware of the possibilities to represent the physiology of subtle movement in paintings. The Thaliarchos painter is generally recognised as the artist of the tops of some powder-box pyxides, although it is not excluded that he was actively painting various types of vessels. The type of ground and the way in which the foot of the man is worked can support the thesis that the fragment is from his workshop. [For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price]

Lot 293

Circa 9th century A.D.. Openwork plate brooch or mount with two pierced lugs to the reverse depicting a rider and standing figure; the horse and figures shown in profile; the rider wearing baggy trousers and a cloak or mantle, a spear carried beneath his leg, his hair worn long and knotted at the rear; the standing figure wearing a floor-length robe and holing a shield; square panel beneath the horse with a grid of nine squares. Cf. similar mounts from Tissø, Ribe, Sentinget and elsewhere published in Garde?a, G., Pentz, P. and Price, N., Revisiting the 'Valkyries' in Current Swedish Archaeology, December, 2022 (offprint copy included). 6.3 grams, 34 mm (1 3/8 in.). Found near Great Massingham, Norfolk, UK, circa 2010. The scene depicted on the mount or brooch is often assumed to represent an armed warrior on horseback and a Valkyrie holding a shield. However, the rider's long and looped hairstyle may be typical of females of the period, and the standing figure often appears to be wearing a helmet. In a detailed discussion by Garde?a, Pentz and Price (2022), the standard interpretation is challenged since we do not know whether the scene shows humans or deities, nor whether the rider and attendant might be interpreted as an armed female being welcomed into Freyja's home of Folkvangr. Does the grid beneath the horse imply that there is a gaming-board available to the rider, a typical item of hall-based enjoyment alongside the horn which symbolises beer or mead? Or does this actually show a saddle-cloth, a prosaic piece of riding equipment?
