Caledonia First Rate of 120 guns, circa 1810 -- 27½ x 37½ x 14¼in. (70 x 95.5 x 36cm.) Provenance : With Trevor Phillips & Sons, London circa 1998 ~~*~~ A magnificent and highly successful ship throughout her long life, H.M.S. Caledonia was laid down in Plymouth Dockyard in January 1805 and launched on 25th June 1808. Built under the direction of Mr. Joseph Tucker to a design by Sir William Rule, one of the Surveyors of the Navy, she was originally intended to carry 100 guns but was modified whilst on the stocks to mount 120 guns and, as such, was only the second vessel of the fleet to be so impressively armed. An enormous ship of 2,616 tons burthen, her gun deck measured 205 feet in length with a 53½ foot beam, and she was the largest warship ever constructed for the navy at the time of her completion. First commissioned as flagship to Admiral Lord Gambia, she was soon in action when, on 12th April 1809, she played a pivotal rôle in the destruction of the French fleet lying in the Basque Roads, off St. Nazaire. The Royal Navy's long blockade of the French ports was a tedious business and Caledonia was still stationed off the Basque Roads on 24th February 1811 when she was struck by lightning and had to return to Portsmouth for a new foremast. On 1 s t June 1811, she became flagship to Admiral Sir Edward Pellew (later Lord Exmouth) after which she spent three years in the Mediterranean for the duration of his tenure there as Commander-in-Chief. During this period she was present at the surrender of the fortress at Genoa in April 1814 prior to returning home that August, and was thereafter laid up due to the final ending of hostilities with France. Not commissioned again until 1830, she was found to be in such excellent condition that there followed several more periods wearing the flags of various Commanders-in-Chief, including two further terms in the Mediterranean, until she was finally withdrawn from sea service in the early 1850s. In 1856 she was fitted out to replace the old Dreadnought as the Seamen's Hospital Ship at Greenwich and, having taken the name of Dreadnought in 1857, occupied that position until the hospital facilities were moved ashore in 1873. No longer worth refitting or even hulking, Caledonia was towed to Chatham where she was broken up in the spring of 1875.

"I do hope your Spanish do was as successful as Tessa's and my cruise. We only threw up once...", Daphne du Maurier: (1907 - 1989) British Author, T.L.S. Menabilly Par Cornwall, 25th April 1966, 'Bing', three pages, to Maureen Baker-Munton, ('Dearest Maureen'), an amusing and lengthy update on her recent holiday 'I do hope your Spanish do was as successful as Tessa's and my cruise. We only threw up once, the second day in the Adriatic, when it was very rough.' 'And we both got madly menaced, like schoolgirls, by the Host of the cruise, the chief lecturer, Sir John Wolfenden (Consenting Adults!) and vied for his favours! We think he would have T.N.ND us if we had not been who we were, as it was he and his wife (Queen of Tell Hims, but nice) were very kind to us, and Sir John (whom we nicknamed privately "the consenter" obviously got a thing about Tessa's youth and beauty - like Moper would have done with anyone young! So that Lady Consenter would not get on a hard chair, I had to engage her in conversation while Tessa danced in the bar with Sir John, and then I would push her into coping with the wife, while I got my innings!' Although she confides 'he's bald with glasses, what can we see in him?! I think it was the very clever way he put over the lectures, like my Daddy on the stage'. Daphne summarises 'ship-board friendships! No one was honky onboard, but they were none of them people I really want madly to see again, but then you know what I am'. Adding 'I bought a shepherd's cloak in Crete which I wore all the time, a white thing with a hood! (The mad authoress)'.Sir John Wolfenden (1906 - 1985) was a British educationalist who chaired the Wolfenden Committee whose report, recommending the decriminalisation of homosexuality, was published in 1957.(All rights are reserved by The Chichester Partnership and no written materials may be reproduced in part or in full without the express prior written permission of The Chichester Partnership c/o Curtis Brown Group Ltd)

'Bing', 21st September 1954, to Mrs Maureen Baker-Munton, nee Luschwitz, ('Dearest Maureen') short note detailing Daphne's lack of culinary expertise. 'The loons and I had to get our own sups (Joyce was out) which was tricky as none of us knew how to open a tin, and wrenched at it with knives!' Of her daughter Tess attending the county ball, 'complete chaos, as she had her lovely white frock, but no coat, and it was pouring with rain, so finally she went off in the old blue boat cloak, and a sun hat to keep her hair dry!'. Tempera on wood, dimensions 31x26 cm, 19th Century. Saint Elias, also known as Elijah, is commemorated in the Byzantine Church on July 20th. Elias is an Old Testament prophet who lived in the 9th Century before the Coming of Jesus Christ. The troparion of his feast calls him "a pillar of prophets, and the second forerunner of the coming of Christ". The icon depicts him in a chariot drawn by fiery horses heading heavenward and his cloak falling earthward into the outstretched arms of Elisha, his companion and disciple, crossing the River Jordan. The main scene presents the saint hiding from persecutors in Cherith and miraculously fed by a raven. On the left side of the icon he is depicted with his disciple and with an angel illustrating scenes from his life. The end of the earthly life of Elias came mysteriously. As he was conversing with Eliseus on the hills of Moah, "a fiery chariot, and fiery horses parted them both asunder, and Elias went up by a whirlwind into heaven" (Kings. 2:11) Jews, Christians and Moslems pay high honor to Elias, Carmelite monks cherish the belief that their order was in some sense founded by him. Together with Moses, he appeared at Christ`s transfi guration.

Commercial Investigator's Journal [?Hughes, Augustus]Journal of an investigation into the abuses of the Porto Wine Trade, manuscript, 1829. 8vo, half leather over marbled boards; pp. 67 pages MSS.The unknown author was sent by 'Mr Lancaster' to investigate fraud committed against him by the Porto wine trade. The author appears to be writing to M'rs Horton and Peter Garton with his information. This journal is principally a record of the agent's findings, with digressions for sight-seeing and a letter home to his family. After this letter is the name Augustus Hughes, which may be the signature of the author. By this time the British monopoly, symbolised by the British Factory building, had been broken by the Portugese regulatory powers granted to the Douro Wine Company. The long and detailed breakdown of the operations of the farmers, Douro Wine Company and the English Factory covers the erratic approval process, the dubious storage mechanisms and the mixing of bad wine with good (the 1818 and 1825 vintages being especially poor) which led to the buyer not being sure about the vintage they were buying. The agent describes the splitting of the production into three: home consumption, lucrative export to Brazil, and the remaining third for the British market - all at different prices. There are several pages of probing questions and the answers he received and more on wine-growing districts and the controllers of the Company. The whole has an air of cloak and dagger - he writes about sending letters via a local agent who can get them unintercepted by the packet agent and about being advised not to go into the farming country because of the danger - but still has time to record the sights and experiences of travel. The author appears to have preferred the clean Porto to Lisbon's beggars, though he seems to have enjoyed the trip between them. By the end, he is clearly seeking an exit, writing about his fatigue, before recounting a harrowing triple hanging he saw from his window. A fascinating record of the corruption of the wine trade in Portugal of the 19th century.. Binding worn, some foxing, marking etc to pages, very good.
