The Wizard's Enchantments, pen, ink, and watercolour on artist's board, depicting a cavernous candle-lit scene with a wizened bearded sorcerer sitting on a high stool, dressed in a scarlet cloak, and matching fur-lined boots and pointed hat adorned with stars and a crescent moon, with a potion bubbling on the brick stove before him, large leather-bound tomes scattered on the floor, a crow perched on an open volume, a pair of onlooking mice, a skull, and various other accoutrements of wizardry, 26 x 17 cm (10.25 x 6.75 ins), mounted, together with a pencil sketch on paper similar, depicting a wizard at work surrounded by bellows, ancient texts, potion bottles, pestle & mortar, etc., a few paint stains, verso with additional sketch of a wizard, pencil, partially outlined in black ink, sheet size 25.5 x 20 cm (10 x 8 ins) (Qty: 2)NOTESProvenance: From the artist's studio and thence by descent. This striking painting, so typical of Folkard's style, with its meticulous line, fantastical subject and atmospheric palette, was probably never published. Folkard may well have used his own visage as a starting point for that of the wizard; the bearded Pre-Raphaelite appearance of the artist in his early days translated well into such subjects, which could then be worked up to greater heights of fantasy. The subject of magic and wizardry itself would have had a special interest and meaning for the artist as he worked for a period of time as a magician under the name 'Professor Volkard' after attending a show at the Egyptian Hall in London. It was only when designing his own conjuring show programmes that his artistic genius became apparent.

A Sir Cedric Hardwicke costume from The Hunchback of Notre DameRKO Radio Pictures, 1939. Designed by Walter Plunkett. Brown velvet full-length long-sleeved cloak with an additional burgundy and tan flocked undercloak sewn in, bearing an interior 'Western Costume Co.' label inscribed, 'Sir Cedric Hardwicke / 2[?]047' in black ink, with 'Harwick [sic]' written in black ink and a 'Western Costume Co.' stamp on the interior. This luxurious costume is evidence of RKO's sparing no expense for the sumptuous production based on the novel by Victor Hugo. Directed by William Dieterle and co-starring Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara, Hardwicke plays the wicked Frollo whose judgmental superiority and hypocrisy wreak havoc on Quasimodo and Esmeralda. Hardwicke wears the costume throughout much of the film, and his naturally regal bearing, the imposing design of this costume, and his superior performance make him the perfect villain of this piece; he ultimately meets his demise in this costume when he is thrown off the top of Notre Dame Cathedral by Quasimodo in the climactic end of the film. Accompanied by a DVD of the film.

Cream-colored strapless full-length crepe gown with a lace-up bustier-type bodice with interior boning, with flower appliques at the neckline and waist, and a long pleated skirt, bearing a plain interior label inscribed, 'Glynis Johns,' a blue-lettered 'Paramount' label, an interior 'Property of Paramount Pictures Corp. Ladies Wardrobe' stamp, a Paramount cleaning tag, and 'PAR' written in black ink. Johns plays the voice of reason to Danny Kaye's manic jester in this colorful musical which also stars Angela Lansbury. Johns wears the gown with a blue cloak in the movie. Accompanied by a DVD of the film.

Manner of Henry Barlow Carter, Whitby, watercolour, 31cm by 45cm Significantly stained paper with small to large sized foxing spots throughout. Staining particularly apparent in a more pronounced vertical band along right hand side edge. Superficial surface scratch running horizontally across the back through the lady's black cloak standing towards the upper right. General creasing to lower right hand corner. No evidence of cockling. Not examined out of the frame.

Obverse: oblique 'wreath' design evoking degraded bust of Apollo with 'cloak' motifs, wheel and crescents. Reverse: triple-tailed horse prancing right, wheels above back and between legs, pellet-in-annulet motifs in fields. Very Fine, extremely rare with an excellent provenance. Diameter: 14.39mm. Weight: 1.26g. ABC 2093, BMC 498-501. Provenance: found Silchester, Hampshire, 2016. Recorded on the PAS as HAMP-F56CE2. 

British Late Iron Age, an uninscribed debased silver/billon stater of the Southwestern region/Durotriges, dating c. 50-20 BC. Rudd's 'Cranborne Chase' type. Obverse: devolved bust of Apollo right, composed of 'wreath' and 'cloak' patterns. Reverse: stylised horse and charioteer left. About Fine. Pleasing greyish tone, struck on nicely rounded flan. Diameter: c. 17.5mm. Weight: 3.49g. ABC 2157, BMC 2525-2546.Discussion: the highly stylised obverse and reverse designs on this coin are very loosely derived from those on silver and gold Macedonian coinage of the late 4th/early 3rd century BC. Copied widely across Europe, this 'down the line' transmitting of the design appears to have reached Britain in the mid 1st century BC. Provenance: ex A Smith collection.

Roman, incomplete cast copper-alloy anthropomorphic figurine of probable first or second century date. Only about half the figurine survives, taking the form of a hooded and cloaked standing male before truncating abruptly in an old, worn break. Folds in the cloak are represented by parallel incisions, while on the face (though worn) the eyes and hair have been rendered quite realistically. Condition: good despite wear, even dark greenish patina. Length: c. 30mm. Discussion: this object may represent one of the genii cucullacti or 'hooded gods' apparently beloved in Late Iron Age and early Roman Britain. Named after their distinctive attire (the cucullus, a sort of conjoined hooded poncho), they are thought to be associated with the concepts of prosperity and fertility. A number of depictions are known, some in stone from Hadrian's wall, others in the form of small figurines somewhat similar to this potential example. Provenance: from the collection of an ex metal detectorist, found Oxfordshire/Berkshire/Hampshire in the 1980s or 1990s.
