Follower of Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens, British 1829-1915- Study of a horse with saddle and a rifle; oil on canvas, 51x61cm Note: The horse depicted is likely to be an officer's charger circa early 20th century, prior to the outbreak of WWI. With red and blue cavalry cloak rolled on the saddle, rifle held in a leather bucket, horse brass at the muzzle, mess tins, and picket ropes for tethering. CONDITION REPORT: in a modern gilt composition frame, some losses to gesso canvas is not relined on a wooden stretcher which is covered over with brown tape applied putty repairs to the reverse of the canvas in numerous places staining to the reverse of the canvas Recto: two small tears to the canvas lower left paint surface is subject to some older craquelure subject to bar marks and canvas fatigue under inspection with uv lamp there is evidence of retouching around and on the legs head and flanks of the horse and in the background otherwise in good original condition

Laureate head of Apollo left / Goddess with billowing cloak standing to left, holding scroll and filleted palm frond; ? to lower left. CCO 303 (D5/R3); BAR Issue 69; HGC 2, 1420; SNG ANS 904 (same dies). 2.23g, 14mm, 10h. Extremely Fine. Extremely Rare, and one of the finest known examples.

Hellenistic prince, wearing armour with cloak behind and holding transverse sceptre, standing left [on tunny fish?], in pose of acclamation / Quadripartite incuse square. Triton XIII, 5 January 2010, 175 (same dies); otherwise unpublished. 2.66g, 10mm. Good Very Fine. Apparently only the second known specimen, and the finer of the two.

Despite great success together in the theatre, GertieÉs marriage to Lionel Monckton was not a happy one.The gossip columns carried many stories about the popular showgirl and in 1913 there were rumours of a liaison with the Duke of Westminster, with both reportedly about to divorce their respective spouses so that they could marry each other. John Vanderbank (British, 1694–1739) Portrait of Mary Thompson, half length, in white with pearls in her hair signed centre left "Jn. Vanderbank/ fecit 1737" oil on canvas 74 x 62cm (29 x 24in) Provenance: By descent within the Anstey family to the present owner. Mary Thompson was sole heir to her father Anthony Thompson (1641-1721) of Trumpington. Of her two brothers, one was mad and the other, who had married, (see Lot 611) committed suicide and was childless. She married the Reverend Christopher Anstey (c.1680-1751), Rector of nearby Brinkley (see Lot 606). Relined and cleaned and with craquelure overall. A few small areas of retouching in the face and large area in blue cloak, which are well matched to the original. Small area of flaking and loss at the left hand side. Frame has been regilded.

From the probable date of the portrait, circa 1720, the unidentified sitter is possibly the unknown wife of the brother of Mary Thompson (see Lot 607), having descended in the Anstey family; she died childless.
