2nd-3rd century AD. A provincial silver-gilt rectangular votive relief depicting a standing goddess in the act of making an offering with a phiale in her right hand, the veil of her cloak (pallium) worn over the head (capite velato), dressed in a long Ionic chiton falling over the lower legs, a trace of gilding on the neck and face. See similar images of Cybele with patera in Nankov, 'toward the Thracian Religion in the Early Hellenistic Period: a terracotta figurine of Kybele from Seuthopolis reconsidered' in Archaeologia Bulgarica, 3, 2007, Sofia, pp.47-67, figs.11,13,18. 42 grams, 77mm (3"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. This Roman provincial work could evoke the image of Cybele-Demeter or Artemis Posphoros. The two divinities are often identified by the similarity of holding the phiale in the right hand, as it is possible to see on some of the autonomous coins of Kabyle. China & Japan.- Ionides (Helen Euphrosyne "Lallie", MBE, daughter of Constantine Alexander Ionides, art patron and collector, 1833-1900, 1871-1967), Mildred Martineau, of Littleworth, Esher) & Elizabeth Chamberlain. Travel journals of a tour of China and Japan, 8 vol. (7 vol. travel journals and 1 vol. of copies of letters), duplicated typescripts, some photographs, of various places in China and Japan, slightly browned, original morocco (not all uniform), cloth and buckram, morocco covers detached and lacking spines, cloth creased and faded, 4to, 1908-10.⁂ A well written and interesting collection of travel journals by three cultured and observant Edwardian women. China, Beijing. "April 4 1910. Yesterday Capt. Fitz Hugh fetched us in a motor and took Lambert, Sis, and myself out to the Wan-Shou-ssu Temple, where the Imperial family rest on their way to the Summer Palace... . In 1900 the Germans looted this temple, and all the ornaments are quite new and it has been repainted, which makes it glaring, but it is very prettily designed and there is a lovely rock garden!"Tibet, Lhasa. "The Potala is a huge square building, topping a little conical hill, with a dozen or so of smaller ones on the slopes below, all flat topped and dotted with blind window arches like the one at the Ta Fo Sau. There is a fine mellow massiveness about the whole design of great square blocks set in the clustering darkness of fine trees. The bell sounded for prayers... and Lamas of all ages came pouring up, clad in all shades of yellow... many in most undignified haste robing as they ran. They filed into a small side temple and squatted in rows... while the head priest in a glorious red cloak, mellow with age marked time with a bell. Then the chief priest came and talked to us and allowed us to photograph him in his cloak, with a wonderful tasselled ornament hanging down his back, he was very friendly and much interested."Japan. Nihongami. "After we'd done bowing and smiling... I was escorted upstairs to unrobe, and when I came down in my cotton kimono, there was quite a crowd waiting... . It was a drastic process. I don't wonder Jap ladies sleep on a wooden pillow and only have it done once a week... . Then they applied oil and stuff that looked like cobbler's wax and I quailed but endured... the hairdresser-in-chief shooed away her assistants and set to work in real earnest. She scraped me and combed me and tied my unhappy hair with bits of gut, pulled taut with her teeth and she tied on a long tail of black hair and no end of pads.

Spanish school end of XVIII century."Immaculate Conception.Oil on glass.Measurements: 27 x 20 cm., 40 x 33 cm. (frame).Oil on canvas of vertical format and devotional character. The author collects in this work the figure of the Virgin according to the advocation of the Immaculate Conception. This theory is based on the presence of the crescent moon under the Virgin's feet and the appearance of the flowers that are arranged in the lower part of the canvas. It is true that in this case the author has not collected all the litanies linked to the presentation of the Immaculate Conception. However, he has opted for a sober composition, eliminating any detail that could distort the viewer's vision. On a neutral background is the monumental figure of the Virgin, immersed in a break of glory of golden light and quality. The Virgin places her hands on her chest and directs her gaze towards the sky in an attitude of prayer. Dressed in a red tunic and dark cloak, the artist removes the figure from the idea of universality and goodness associated with the white tunic and blue cloak and confronts us as spectators with a mother suffering for her son.

Ca. 664- 332 B.C. Late Dynastic Period, Saite Period. Egyptian. An ancient Egyptian bronze figure of Osiris standing mummiform with his hands emerging from his cloak, holding the crook and flail, and wearing a broad beaded collar with tassels and the atef-crown with uraeus, the missing plumes formerly inserted. His face with full outlined lips and eyes and eyebrows.Osiris was one of the most popular ancient Egyptian gods and was connected with male fertility. He was said to be the first Pharaoh of Egypt and was murdered by his brother Seth for his crown. Osiris was revived by Isis, his wife and sister, to conceive Horus, the son who would avenge his death. After death, Osiris became ruler of the underworld and God of the dead, which is why he is shown with the crook and flail, the symbols of authority for Egyptian rulers.Objects for Eternity, fig. 3.10, for a parallel.Metropolitian Museum of Art, New York, https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/551302Ca. Attributed to Michael Pacher (German, circa 1435-1498): A carved wood and polychrome and parcel gilt decorated figure of a male saint, possibly St JohnSouth German or Tyrolean, late 15th centurythe figure with rope tied wavy shoulder length fair hair looking slightly to sinister, clad in a draped and folded cloak held about his body, his left hand clutching the upheld hem, raised on a later stained wood rectangular base, the figure, 78cm high, the later base 5cm high Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Reinhold Hofstätter, ViennaThe sculptor, architect and painter Michael Pacher was active during the later part of the 15th century. Cited as perhaps one of the earliest artists to introduce the Renaissance style to a German clientele, he was famous for producing elaborate painted and sculpted works in both wood and stone showing a uniquely personal side incorporating elements of the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Gothic.Producing works including painted structures for altarpieces on an unparalleled scale in North European, his finest work is perhaps the St Wolfgang Altarpiece (1471-1481) in Salzkammergut which is considered to be one of the most outstanding examples of a carved and painted altar shrine illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Pacher's other great work, the Altarpiece of the Church Fathers was created in 1483 for Neustift Monastery and this also combined painting and sculpture to produce a unique composition. Influenced primarily by North Italian art, Pacher's work however shares characteristics with the work of the Italian artist Andrea Mantegna whilst also reflecting the heritage and tradition of a number of South German carvers. The plump facial features of the present lot with his upturned nose, distinctive waving to the hair and crinkled folds of the drapery compare closely to figures in Pacher's St Wolfgang Altarpiece, see T. Müller, Gotik in Tirol, Bozen, 1976, figs. 122-124 and pl.
