A large and interesting Chinese embroidered silk panel of a Chinese lady with tray of tea/ wine cups, on red ground, Qing Dynasty, framed and glazed, 150cm x 82cm I bought this piece in the early 1980,s and had it restored by a museum conservationist in Canada. The original piece was considerably larger, approx 1x2 meters. Unfortunately because of irreparable damage 30 centimetres had to be removed all around. I have been told that the embroidery had been taken to Germany by an opera singer, sometime in the turn of the century and that the piece had considerable deterioration at that time. It was said to have used as both stage enhancement and also as a cloak during performances of Chinese Opera. The image represents the Chinese Goddess known as KHAN LIN " the great Mother of China" with her consort SHAG TE. Kuan Lin is the goddess of EARTH, FERTILITY AND bound Less COMPASSION. She is also known as "She who hears the weeping world"
