John Emms (British, 1843-1912)The Bitch Pack of the Meath Foxhounds signed and dated 'JNO. EMMS/1896' (lower right)oil on canvas111 x 157.5cm (43 11/16 x 62in).Footnotes:ProvenanceHahn Fine Art Galleries, London.Private collection, USA.Anon. sale, Bonhams, New York, 16 February 2010, lot 121.Private collection, UK (acquired from the above sale).A keen huntsman with a consummate interest in the sporting field, John Emms had the rare ability to give real life to his subject. He was at his very best when painting dogs; with confident use of fluid brushstrokes he gives weight and solidity to their different physical characteristics as well as their individual temperaments. We know from contemporary accounts how Emms used to walk to the kennels everyday and return to his studio with one hound after another as he undertook preliminary sketches in working up to the overall composition.Emms was born at Blofield, Norfolk, the son of Henry William Emms, an amateur artist. Emms had two brothers and a sister, who married the brother of Sir William Blake Richmond, PRA. Like many aspiring artists, Emms travelled to London where he became an assistant to Frederic, Lord Leighton, PRA. It was through Leighton that Emms first visited Lyndhurst, when he assisted the former to paint a fresco in Lyndhurst Parish Church. He then made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1866 and proceeded to exhibit elsewhere at the British Institution, Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolour Society. In 1872, Emms returned to Lyndhurst where his skill in portraying animals, particularly dogs, as well as his participation in the hunting field and his convivial nature, led to no want of patrons. The Victorian gentleman's love of his horse and dog led to many other commissions including one from the Duke of Newcastle to paint his Clumber spaniels. In 1880 Emms married Fanny Primmer, daughter of a local Lyndhurst gentleman. Soon after their marriage he was working in London but returned in about 1881 to Lyndhurst where he built a large house and studio in Queen's Road.Emms cut a flamboyant figure, always dressed in a long black cloak and matching wide brimmed hat. He and his family led a somewhat bohemian life; when times were good, after selling a painting, he would take Fanny, their three daughters and son up to London to stay in the best hotels and live life to the full. But times were not always good. During the early 1900s Emms suffered a stroke and was unable to work; as a result he took to heavy drinking and the family's finances went into decline. He died in November 1912 aged 71 and is buried in Lyndhurst cemetery.Hunting with Hounds is a tradition in Ireland that goes back to ancient times and features strongly in Celtic literature and legend. There is a pack recorded in the Meath area as early as 1723; the earliest record shows that a Mr Nicholson of Balrath kept a pack of foxhounds at that time, and hounds were kept by the Nicholson family until the beginning of the 19th century. Mr Lowther and Mr Hopkins also kept packs.Historically, the most important hunting establishments in Co. Meath were those of Mr Pollock of Mountainstown, and Mr Gerrard of Gibbstown. In 1813 Messrs Pollock and Gerrard joined packs with kennels at the Castle of Clongill, as the Clongill Hunt, with a subscription, Mr Pollock being Master. At first the Clongill hunted only the north end of the county, but by degrees absorbed the whole. In 1817 the Clongill Hunt became the Meath Hunt. During the War part of the county was lent to the Louth and Ballymacad Hunts, an arrangement which is still partly in operation today. At the time the present lot was painted, the famous John Watson was Master, his mastership spanning from 1891 to 1908.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. Lot 914

A group of Norwegian and Swedish metal and gilt-metal jewellery, to include a cloak pin, pearl set brooch cross etc

Lot 2607

2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze Marcoman warrior applique depicting a seated Germanic prisoner, the body gathered with his hands bound to the front with heavy chains, dressed in tunic and breeches, with fur cloak on his shoulders, long hair and beard, probably part of a scene of Roman victory over the Barbarians. Similar specimen in Rolland H., Bronze Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, p.102, no.188. 37 grams, 37m (1 1/2"). From a private Netherlands collection; previously in an old collection since before 1980. The representation of Germanic warrior prisoners began on military appliques from the 1st century AD, especially in the shape of mounts for horse breast protections (Baltea), and spread especially during the Marcomannic Wars of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius; this applique points to the representation of a Marcoman Warrior, compared with the representation of the same Barbarian typology as figured on high Roman monuments, like the Sarcophagus of Portonaccio in the Museo Nazionale Romano. Fine condition.

Lot 2616

1st century AD. A bronze figure of a seated rider in cloak and high boots, right arm raised and with hole through hand for insertion of lance. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 457. 26.3 grams, 48mm (2"). From a home counties collection, formed 1970-1980. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lot 304

14th-10th century BC. A sheet-silver chalice with flared foot, narrow stem, flared mouth; carinated band beneath the rim and repoussé guilloche decoration; frieze depicting four vines with crossed stocks extending to scrolled ends with detailed leaves and bunches of grapes; below the vines and between them four human figures comprising: a half-height crouching(?) male facing left with filet to the brow, fringed cloak, cup in the raised right hand; a seated male facing right with chalice in the right hand, low table by his foot with bowl and cup(?); seated male facing left with mantle to the left shoulder and fringed robe, holding on his lap a curved implement (pruning sickle?); the stem with tiered meander pattern. See Amiet, P., Art of the Ancient Near East, New York, 1977; Aruz, J., Art of the First Cities. The Third Millennium B.C. from the Mediterranean to the Indus, New York, 2003; Black, J. and Green, A., Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia, Austin, 2014.216 grams, 12.5cm (5"). From the private collection of a North West London lady; previously with a central London gallery; formerly acquired before 1990. The guilloche border is a prominent feature of many cultures of Mesopotamia and the wider region, found for example on chlorite chalices, cups and other vessels of the Early Dynastic Period (Aruz, items 231, 232, 237 and others) and in repoussé goldwork (Aruz, item 271"). The figural scenes of drinking beneath the vines with their burden of leaves and bunches of grapes are suggestive of the chalice's use as a vessel for the distribution of wine fermented from the grapes depicted in those scenes. Alcohol was routinely used in religious ceremonies as a libation (or possibly for lustration), while fermented drinks based on grapes and dates were available (Black & Green, 2014, p.28"). The figure shown with a reaping hook or sickle suggests that the maker or owner of the chalice was familiar with the cultivation and harvesting of grapes in order to produce wine. Fine condition; fragmentary.

Lot 522

6th century AD. An excessively rare gilt-bronze great square-headed brooch of Hines's Class I comprising a trapezoidal headplate with stamped and chip-carved detailing, broad bow, trefoil footplate with lappets beneath the bow, remains of the ferrous pin to the reverse of the headplate and solder scar where the catchplate was attached. See Hines, J., A New Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Great Square-Headed Brooches, London, 1997; MacGregor, A. and Bolick, E., A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-Ferrous Metals), Oxford, 1993; Mannering, U., Iconic Costumes, Scandinavian Late Iron Age Costume Iconography, Ancient Textiles Series vol. 25, Oxford, 2019. Featured on the front cover of Treasure Hunting magazine, June 2020; along the with story on p.10; accompanied by a copy of the Treasure Hunting Magazine pages. 86.05 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). From an important English collection; found in Lincolnshire, UK; accompanied by a report by Anglo-Saxon and Viking specialist, S. Pollington. The brooch is in remarkably good condition, thanks in large part to the quality of the mercury gilding which has retained all the ornament to the obverse surface, and to the careful cleaning and conservation which it has undergone. It has no exact parallel in the corpus of known examples of the type, but all the principal features of its design can be found on one or more other brooches in the series. Given that these brooches were relatively rare even when they were in use, and that they were individually created by craftsmen, it is likely that a unique combination of elements was considered desirable. That said, the brooch most closely resembles an example from Fairford, Gloucestershire, England (Hines's plate 8a) in some of its layout and ornament. For example, the two concentric ?-shaped bands of chip-carved Style I decoration appearing on the headplate and the presence of a facing human mask in each upper corner are features shared by both brooches. The broad bow has a shallow curvature with three raised ribs and two plain recesses - features which appear on a brooch from Laceby (Hines's plate 65b) and elsewhere. A midrib with offset punched detailing extends from the lower edge of the headplate across the bow and down the footplate as far as the chin of the lower mask; a similar feature appears also on an example from Luton, Bedfordshire (Hines's plate 23"). The footplate is formed as three radiating lobes, two smaller laterals and a larger one forming the finial; each lobe contains a facing human mask similar to those on the upper corners of the headplate; each mask is piriform and slightly domed, with a vertical midrib flanked by two pellet eyes and segmented bands representing the hair and beard. Above the lateral lobes where the bow connects to the footplate are two lappets, each a stylised profile 'horse-head' with looped lips; within the curve of the lips there is a deliberate small hole. The whole obverse (apart from the lower edge of the headplate) is framed by a continuous raised border bearing stamped decoration, each stamp a grid of four squares; this design is repeated on the midrib. Great square-headed brooches were an Anglian fashion of the early to mid-6th century AD with counterparts in southern Scandinavia and a few examples known from continental Europe - mainly from coastal areas with links to the North Sea (Mannering, 2019, especially a gold foil from Gudme, Denmark with possible brooch at the shoulder, item GU1"). They are associated with high-status females, and occur in graves with other types of brooch as well as beads, girdle-hangers and other items (Hines, 1997"). Due to their large size and impressive decoration, it is assumed that they were used to fasten a mantle or cloak worn over a peplos-style dress fastened by smaller brooches such as annular, button or small-long types worn in pairs at the shoulders or collar. A video of this lot can be viewed on Timeline Auctions website. Very fine condition. A stunning example of early Anglo-Saxon art at its very best.

Lot 1111

1st-3rd century AD. A silver statuette of Mercury (Greek Hermes) wearing a pilos hat with wings, head turned to the left; naked except for cloak over right shoulder; money bag held in left hand. 35 grams, 57mm (2 1/4"). Property of a South West London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; by descent 1986. Fine condition.

Lot 1140

1st-2nd century AD. A provincial marble statuette representing a youth dressed in the style of Greek philosophers, wearing a long draped himation, the breast naked, left hand in resting position under the back, the right arm (preserved only partially) resting over the body, unusually with a feminine hairstyle. See Metropolitan Museum, inventory n. 14.130.1, for a similar bronze statuette. 1.6 kg, 25cm (10"). From a private collection kept in Switzerland since 2008; previously in a Japanese collection kept in Switzerland; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by IADAA certificate number no.01042020/1322. This small statuette echoes the life-sized statues found in the eastern Mediterranean, like the one from the island of Rhodes, whose ancient Greek cities were wealthy, flourishing centers of commerce and culture under the Romans. These style of statues were created to represent sons of important Roman officials stationed on Rhodes, on the Greek Islands, or the sons of wealthy Greeks, citizen of the empire. As Roman influence spread throughout the Mediterranean world, there was interchange of fashion, customs, and culture. Romans had great admiration for Greek culture; the island of Rhodes was famous for its schools of philosophy and rhetoric, and this boy even wears a Greek himation (cloak) instead of the traditional Roman toga. Fair condition, some restoration.

Lot 1254

1st-2nd century AD. A silver statuette of Priapus standing naked, wearing only a short cloak arranged on his shoulders, holding the robe from the corners, exposing his exaggerated genitalia under an offering of flowers, finely-detailed head with the hairstyle and beard of a Greek philosopher; in lifting his cloak, he reveals his enormous phallus, creating a vivid connection between fertility and abundance. See Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 136; and Dunleavy C.A., The Image of Priapus: Ambiguity and Masculinity in Roman Visual Culture, Bristol, 2018. 12 grams, 36mm (1 1/2"). Property of a European collector; acquired on the European art market in the 2000s. Priapus was an ancient Greek and Roman deity, usually represented as a small bearded man with a huge phallus. According to the Romans, he was born from the illegitimate love between Aphrodite and Zeus (for the Greeks the father was Dionysus) and was transformed into an obscene character by Hera, jealous wife of the king of Olympus. Priapus was a symbol of sexual instinct and male fertility and was protector of nature and guardian of gardens and flowers. Fine condition.

* Mitford (Nancy Freeman, 1904-1973). A good collection of 17 Autograph Letters Signed and 8 postcards, signed variously 'Nancy Mitford', 'Nancy Rodd', 'Nancy' & 'NM', primarily from Paris, 1967-72, the letters a total of 30 pages, some scattered spotting and creasing, 4to/8vo (Qty: 25)NOTESThe wit for which Mitford was so well known as a correspondent shows through these letters, even when she was in great pain and most desperately ill with the cancer which was shortly to end her life. ‘... I’m fascinated by what you say of the archives of St G[ermain] des Prs - what a lot of French stuff there is in Russia. I've just done an essay on Carlyle & F[rederick] the Great & remarked, though it's perhaps not very original, that whereas modern historians put everything down to economic trends the 19th cent English ones put everything down to religion. I suppose it's because the modern ones despise this attitude that they avert their eyes from the Wars of Religion. …' ‘… You might go & see Mr Buchanan at the bookshop [Heywood Hill] … . Sometimes they print little things in limited editions for sophisticated customers (a few dirty words if there are any might be a help!!). …’ ‘… The awful thing about being ill nowadays is that nobody takes an interest in you - all the doctors spend their time either I suppose transplanting hearts or else patching up road accident victims. When I was young the Dr used to pop in to see how you were. It was more comfortable. In 5 weeks I've only seen doctors twice - my own & the specialist. I hope they are praying for one but doubt it! …’ [After reading Washington Square :] '... My view about marrying for money is that people must have a reason for falling in love & that is often money, but doesn't prevent a marriage from being as happy as when founded on other reasons: sex, power & so on! I would like to have had a word with the doctor! But I think he was one of those fathers unable to bear the idea of his daughter marrying at all. …’ ‘… Misprints. I was thinking, while reading for Frederick, how old books never have them. They are among the wonders of progress. Partisan for artisan is rich. The worst is that the reader NEVER twigs.’ ‘… Noel Coward really was I.S. here (in a cloak & dagger flat with 3 entrances) but I am NOT (far too deaf & dotty I fear). …’
